This workshop is for Intervention Specialists, Directors of Special Education, Literacy Coaches, Title 1, & other classroom teachers The term assessment implies an “information gathering process to solve a problem that culminates in decisions and actions that affect an individual’s life” (Salva & Ysseldyke, 1998). This presentation will introduce educators to various assessment approaches, tools and techniques for integrating assessment data and isolating specific reading problems for planning instruction. Participants will explore standardized and informal tools for assessing phonemic awareness, phonics, word attack, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, including the Diagnostic Assessments of Reading (DAR), and the Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing (CTOPP), and the Gallistel-Ellis Test of Encoding & Decoding. Participants will also be introduced to neurology of dyslexia and the critical structures of English that must be assessed and addressed by instruction.

Thomas Diebold, Ph.D.
Dr. Tom Diebold is regional consultant specializing in instructional intervention for students with learning challenges in the areas literacy, math, and behavior. He is motivated to assist teachers with the implementation of instructional methods and materials based on scientific research on the neurology of dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, ADHD, Asperger’s Syndrome, and other challenging conditions. Prior to forming Diebold Educational Consulting, LLC, Tom served 34 years in Ohio schools as an intervention specialist, low-incidence handicaps supervisor, director of special education, adjunct university instructor, and SST-ECS Consultant.
