HEAD COACH POSITION OPENING Plain Valley Nordic Team May 5, 2015 Plain Valley Nordic Team (PVNT) is looking to hire a head coach for its junior Nordic race team. This will be a year around position that includes travel to regional races. The PVNT is a member of the PNSA Division of USSA Nordic. We started the team in the fall of 2014, and we had 44 skiers join the team in its inaugural season. Skiers ranged in age from 7 to 17. These skiers were supported with ten coaches, keeping the skier to coach ratio low. We are looking to develop a well organized and well supported Nordic race team. We have made great progress in that direction, with the development of a strong mission statement, objectives, and supporting goals. The PVNT has the advantage of its own trail system in Plain, Washington. The Plain Valley Nordic Trails has over 16 K’s of trails groomed for skate and classic, with more K’s of trail being developed each year. Even in this dry year for the West Coast, our higher elevation and close proximity to the crest of the Washington Cascades provided us with great skiing well into March. Other advantages for our team include the backing and support of Plain Hardware, who owns and operates the Plain Valley Nordic Trails Nordic area. Grooming is tailored to what the coaches need and when they need it. Plain Hardware maintains a large selection of Nordic gear as part of its rental “fleet” for tourists. This gear includes classic and skate roller skis, a quiver of Madshus “zero” skis, and many pairs of skis, boots, and poles. This helps to keep the “entry” cost down for young racers. We already have a team van and team jackets. Race suits are currently being designed and will be available this winter. A strong and well organized support network will allow you to stay focused on coaching! Administrative functions, marketing, travel, and equipment will all be supported functions. PLAIN VALLEY NORDIC TEAM | MISSION STATEMENT AND OBJECTIVES

RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Support the defined mission, objectives, and goals of the PVNT. 2. Support further junior Nordic program development as needed. 3. Coach skiers ages 14 – 18. 4. Manage each skier’s goal development, establishment of individualized training plans, and monitoring of plan progress. 5. Organize for, lead, and travel to regional races and coach the racers. 6. Train with team year around. 7. Develop and support local camps and activities. 8. Support and coach the PVNT women’s team (Ladies of Leisure). 9. Support the Plain Valley Nordic Trails as needed or as time allows (grooming, teaching, trail maintenance, rentals, equipment maintenance). 10. Support the business activities of Plain Hardware where possible (especially during months where coaching activities are minimal). 11. Lead the development of curriculum and implementation of a coordinated, progressive skill development program that spans Jackrabbits (ages 6- 9), Devo’s (ages 10-13), and Seniors ages 14 – 21).

MISSION STATEMENT Our mission is to reach out to youth, without discrimination, and through the use of the sport of Nordic skiing, help them to become productive, motivated, respectful, self-sufficient, educated, physically active adults, and positive contributors to our community and the world. OBJECTIVES 1. To teach the sport of Nordic skiing and racing.

SUPPORT STRUCTURE The position will be supported with head coaches of the Jackrabbits, Devo’s and a Senior Coach (non-traveling). All administrative functions, including marketing and social media will be supported. A wax tech will support waxing at races. It is our goal that you focus on the kids and coaching.

3. To fully support each skiers unique goals and life path.

REPORTING STRUCTURE Head coach will report to the Program Director. Senior Coach and the Race Wax Tech will report directly to you.

5. To demonstrate, by our actions, the value of being honest, respectful, helpful, encouraging, kind, friendly, and sharing.

4. To recognize that some skiers are drawn to competition and some are not, and to allow both to thrive within the same team.

6. To build community, in our community, and outside our community.

TERM Twelve months or until end of 2015/2016 winter season (March 31st).

7. To teach skiers how to develop goals, objectives, and supporting plans, and then how to execute to the plan to achieve their goals and objectives. Plan the work and work the plan.

SALARY $40,000

8. To engage the community in investing in youth.

DESIRED ATTRIBUTES AND QUALIFICATIONS A strong passion for coaching kids and Nordic skiing.

9. To recognize that skiers will mature physically and emotionally at different speeds, and as a result, we will adjust their “curriculum” to best meet their needs.

A connection with and a desire to support the Mission and Objectives of the PVNT. Substantial experience with Junior Nordic racing.

10. To focus on quality over quantity, and the personal development of the individual over the performance results of the skier.

Come play in Plain! OUR COMMUNITY Nestled in a small picturesque remote valley on the leeward side of the Washington Cascades Mountain Range, the small community of Plain seems frozen in time. It harkens back to a time where a real and true sense of community and shared destiny existed. This sense derives from its remote location, many miles from any big city, and a commonly shared understanding of the need to help, support, and watch over your neighbors. Part old blood, and part new blood, we enjoy a diverse community that is accepting of all, and works together for the good of the greater community. OUR BUSINESS In business since 1997, Plain Hardware opened the Plain Valley Nordic Trails area in 2010, with 12 K’s of trail groomed for skate and classic skiing, and ski rentals available at Plain Hardware. Every year since the trail system has grown and improved. In the fall of 2014 we formed the Plain Valley Nordic Team, which included skiing opportunities for both youth and adults. The team enjoys broad support from the local community, as there are limited team sport opportunities due to our remote location. ACTIVITIES If a diverse smorgasbord of outdoor activities turns your crank, you will love Plain! Each season offers unique opportunities. In the winter, we enjoy Nordic, backcountry, and alpine skiing. Ice climbing and winter alpine climbing abounds. Spring offers amazing wildflower hikes in the snow capped Cascade Mountains, and the beginning of road biking, mountain biking, rock climbing, kayaking, and rafting season. Summer offers up consistent sunny, warm days with amazing trail running, stand up paddle boarding, mountain climbing, and fly fishing. We enjoy a long Indian summer, with cool, crisp morning and sunny, warm afternoons, and as we try to squeeze in the last adventures of summer, our thoughts turn to sliding on snow, and we break out the roller skis. The best part is that all these activities are literally right out our back door!

CLIMATE Sunshine! Lot’s of it. But great snow in the winter! Average maximum snow depth for Plain is 36” (typically reached in January). Skiing typically starts in December, and runs through March. With an elevation of 2000’ and its close proximity to the crest of the Cascade Mountain Range, we have some of the best and most dependable winter weather. Winter lows around 10 degrees, with winter daytime temps typically in the 20’s. Summer highs hit 85 on average. OUR SCHOOLS In Plain, we have an old fashioned two room school house. Two teachers teach K – 5th grades. Skiing is a big part of the winter PE program, and the school maintains a good selection of boots and skis for the kids, where they ski on the 10 acre property at the school. 6th grade and up are bussed the 20 minute drive into Leavenworth. Many kids are homeschooled locally.

NORDIC TERRAIN Beyond the Plain Valley Nordic Trails, in the immediate area we have several great options to play and train on. Groomed trails are maintained at Lake Wenachee, where the State Park and Washington Snowparks groom a diverse set of trails. The Snowparks also grooms hundreds of miles of multi-use trails out of the Fish Lake Snowpark, frequented by snowmobiles, dog sled teams, and a few hardy skiers. The loop routes are epic. Outside of our immediate area are Scottish Lakes HighCamp, Stevens Pass Nordic Center, and the ski trails of Leavenworth.
