Brain Games: Perception Video

Before you watch the video: 1. Do you think you see the world as it really is? Explain your answer.

VISION: 2. Your brain uses ____________________________ to make decisions about what it is seeing. The light reflected by an object is converted by your eyes into an electric signal and is sent down a neurological pathway to the back of your brain. The answer you need for the blank above can change the way we see a basketball on a court by tweaking it. But this answer can lie to you... and does so all the time.

Nothing that we see is in fact, out there in the physical world. (It’s all in your head!) The answer above is something that your brain uses to impose upon the world, so that it can figure out what is going on in the world.

5. The human brain is hardwired to recognize biological motion. There are parts of the brain that are specifically organized to analyze motion before our conscious brains even become aware of it. You are able to correctly identify movements that you most familiar with from experience. In fact, when you are watching someone else doing an action, you experience it yourself. Your brain feels as if you are experiencing the actions, emotions, pain, and enjoyment of others.

Put your hands in front of you. Cross your arms and place the face of your palms together with your thumbs down, link your fingers together, and then twist your arms down and towards you. Now have a partner point to a finger and try to raise that finger. Can you do it? If you could not raise that finger, why do you think that happens?

9. The brain, whenever it comes across something that is ambiguous uses context clues to assist you. It needs other pieces of information to simplify what you are seeing and make sense of it. Your brain uses past experiences when recognizing words. It does an amazing job at finding meaning quickly. However it is prone to mistakes (as the visual perception showed earlier).
