Can we rely on the government to act in our best interest? Section 1: A review of progress and achievement through parts 1 & 2 of the course (Approx 150 words) The first and second stage of my foundation have helped me to gain insight into which techniques I like to work with, and which are best suited when working towards a specific goal. Whilst experimenting, I have realised my preferred methods consist of satire and working with zines. The most important thing I have learnt is that having variety within your work is key. Therefore, even though I have a preferred selection of methods, this does not necessarily mean I should work with this media for every project that I do. In terms of my personal progress, I feel I have become more diverse within my work and am now able to take into consideration some of the more important factors when creating an outcome. For example, thinking about the target audience I’m aiming to connect with and how my work differs when designed for specific locations of presentation.
Section 2: Project Concept (approx 250 words) Background and key points: I want to explore the role of the government and the social implications of their actions and/failings. I will focus on recent health and safety failures, in particular, the Grenfell Tower Incident and failure by the government to: • • •
prevent the incident in the first place (including a failure to respond to concerns regarding building regulations made by fire safety professionals). safeguard those affected (including a failure to re-house, magnified by the housing crisis and the failure of successive governments to ensure access to affordable housing). act to ensure that the incident does not happen again – and a broader failure to act within a framework where there needs to be failure before there can be a review.
Example of similar campaigns: I want to look at some campaigns that scrutinize the government by identifying certain issues that are deemed unpopular. Examples being work by Lincoln Agnew, Honoré Daumier, Banksy, Barry Blitt and Ai Weiwei.
The creative challenge: Fundamentally, the government is elected on the mandate of the people and they do, whether intentionally or by incompetence, neglect their responsibilities to society. Audience: The target audience is a younger demographic,18-21 years olds. I want to instill a message to young people that they cannot assume that the government always acts competently and in the best interests of society. They may not fail intentionally, but young people need to ensure that they hold the government to account. Outcome: I will create a brutally truthful campaign that exposes failings the government.
Section 3: Evaluation (approx 100 words) My work will serve a purpose in raising awareness of the importance that a well informed electorate has on holding the government to account. The electorate has a responsibility to participate and they cannot simply assume that the government makes the right decisions. I want to make this message to the electorate early as they first begin to exercise their right to vote. I will bring home this point in an emotional and serious way by using the Grenfell Tower Incident, which encapsulates the essence of my message, where the government’s acts led to devastation (and how this could have been prevented with a more politically active society).
