The AATSP encourages, supports and directs programs and research projects involving the exchange of pedagogical and scholarly information. Through extensive collaboration with educators, professionals, and institutions in other countries, the AATSP contributes to a better and deeper understanding between the United States and the Spanish-and Portuguese-speaking nations of the world.

Inscripción/Bienvenida@Creveling 8:30-9:00AM Desayuno Continental Sesión 1A - Pedagogía/Metodología/Cultura/Tecnología 9:00 AM – 9:50 AM Salón: R226 Moderador: Deborah Holmberg, APU The role of the Internet in the teaching of culture in second language courses Vianey Cabrera, USC This presentation is about the role of technology and the Internet in teaching culture in a Spanish language course. It addresses the expectations, the process, the challenges, and the next steps in this effort to increase student's cultural awareness while developing their linguistic skills in the second language classroom.

Sesión 1C – Adquisición de segundas lenguas /Pedagogía 9:00 AM – 9:50 AM Salón: R219 Moderadora: Patricia Parr, UC Riverside Student Teachers: Heritage Speakers in the Spanish Language Classroom Vicky Torres, Omar Pérez & Leticia Corona, UC Riverside The Student Teachers are working to obtain the Single Subject Teaching Credential, Spanish at UC Riverside. Many were students in the community in which they are now student teaching. As heritage speakers themselves, they are uniquely aware of the language challenges of their students. They will present a brief bio with an emphasis on their language experiences and also describe their teaching assignment.

Sesión 1D – Estudio en el extranjero/ServicioAprendizaje en la comunidad/Pasantía 9:00 AM – 9:50 AM Salón: R217 Moderador: Bárbara Padrón León, PCC Recipe for Bi-lingual Acquisition Rena Lahav, CSU Domínguez Hills With an adequate base in the targeted second language, Spanish, it is feasible to become bi-lingual within one month through total language immersion. To this aim, ideally, one resides with a native Spanish-speaking family, while concurrently on weekdays attending classes and cultural excursions conducted solely in Spanish.

Strengthening Spanish Language and Professional Skills Through Long-Term Community Engaged Internship Felisa Guillén, Enrique López, Emily Wilde, Eric Quizhpi, Occidental College Our presentation will explore the multifold benefits of engaging with the local Spanish speaking community through a translation internship with Cedars Sinai medical center. The impact on students’ language acquisition and development is noticeable. The internship has provided an opportunity for students to enrich their language skills, expand their community engagement, and exposure to the professional world.

Sesión 2B – Lingüística/Cultura/Historia 10:05 AM – 10:55 AM Salón: R219 Moderador: Mauricio Escruceria, PCC New Look at the Common Language Movement John Lihani, PCC The Theory of Language Simplification was validated. TE appears naturally in native English learners equally as in adult immigrant students. Since 18 languages are spoken by 84% of the world’s peoples, placing 17 translations of simplified English texts on the Internet will make the simplified TE text available to the great majority of the world’s dwellers.

Plenaria: Rethinking Beginning Spanish

11: 00 AM – 11: 55 PM Salón: Creveling Lee Forester, Hope College Flipping the classroom, mobile computing, MOOCs; our new media require that we “retool” our beginning Spanish courses and materials, including our textbooks. This presentation will demonstrate Ritmos, a beginning Spanish text designed to work in today’s increasingly “flipped” environment and help make beginning Spanish courses even more effective and relevant for our students.

Sesión 3A– Service Learning 1:40 PM – 2:40 PM Salón: R226 Moderador: Estela Torres-Sigriest, PCC Service-Learning in Spanish 220 Liana Stepanyan & Carolina Castillo Larrea, USC Lingua Franca is a community outreach program that allows students enrolled in Span 220 to collaborate with USC’s Child Development center. The presenters will describe Lingua Franca, and will discuss both the positive outcomes and the challenges of this program.

Sesión 3B – Enseñanza de la literatura y la cultura 1:40 PM – 2:40 PM Salón: Creveling Subversive Works/Sustainable Art: A Bookmaking Workshop* Consuelo Sigüenza-Ortiz, USC The presentation explores the work of two publishing collectives in Latin America (in Matanzas, Cuba; Chiapas, México) and how they are transforming the nature and artistry of books and literacy through their social vision, which continues the tradition of the indigenous peoples of the Americas of utilizing handmade, recycled, reusable materials in bookmaking. Adapting Pre-Texts Program techniques from the Harvard University Cultural Agents Initiative, Dr. SigüenzaOrtiz will lead a hands on workshop in which participants will have

the opportunity to create their own artist book with recycled materials. *Limited to 15 participants (due to space and materials).

The Value of Affective and Immaterial Goods in La Celestina Charles Stuart, UC Riverside This presentation examines La Celestina through recent considerations of immaterial and affective labors and the role of desire and sociality in the production of value. Celestina’s death can be attributed to her attempt to remove herself from the circuits of desire that provide meaning to her work and payment.

Aplicando este concepto a la literatura, se podrá mostrar cómo Rojas crea un mundo literario que parece funcionar solo y así “La Celestina creates its own times rather than the other way around.”
