Session 1

Prof. Salwa Kamel (Cairo University) “Loss in Arabic-English translation: The case of information structure” Abstract: Loss in translation results from irreparable formal and cultural incompatibilities among languages. To Carford, equivalence is relative. No compromise can thoroughly compensate for such loss. One of the sources of linguistic incongruity is textual structure, particularly Information Systems where the gap between Arabic and English is quite vast. This presentation attempts to examine this gap and to show how it affects texts in translation. Arabic textuality is characterized via Al-jurjani’s theory of nazm which is perused in light of Halliday’s Textual metafunction. Examples are given from translations of the Qor’an and other texts to alert translators to the amount of loss incurred by this incongruence.

Dr. Yasmine Salah El-Din (Cairo University) “The self and the other: A critical discourse analysis of Leila Aboulela’s ‘The Ostrich’” Abstract: This paper examines the relationship between the Self and the Other as exemplified in Leila Aboulela’s short story “The Ostrich”, published in 2001. The paper analyses the attitudes of the protagonist, Sumra, the Sudanese, and her Sudanese husband, Majdy, toward their own, Self, culture and the Other, British, culture. The research adopts a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework as developed by van Dijk in 2006, as well as a framework of Metadiscourse as presented by Ken Hyland in 2005. Analysis suggests that Aboulela portrays a realistic picture about the Self and the Other cultures, the Sudanese and the British, respectively.

Session 2

Dr. Atta Gebril (The American University in Cairo) "Quantitative methodology in applied linguistics research: Some reflections" Abstract: Quantitative approaches have received increasing attention in applied linguistics research, especially in contexts where the main purpose is to generalize results to a larger population. In such contexts, generalizability of results is ensured through recruiting a sample that is representative of this larger population and through using relatively sophisticated statistical techniques. Researchers are also required to accumulate evidence that supports the reliability and validity of data collection techniques used to verify presupposed claims or hypotheses. For this process to be successful, sound data collection and analysis procedures are required. However, this has not been the case in our field, with research showing quantitative projects in applied linguistics sometimes failing to adhere to professional standards. The current presentation attempts to address some of these challenges and to also suggest guidelines for a successful execution of a quantitative study.

Prof. Zeinab El-Naggar (Ain Shams University) “The impact of language teachers’ changing roles on student learning” Abstract: In today’s ever-changing L2 teaching/learning methods, strategies and techniques , the language teacher has a significant role to play in facilitating student learning. This presentation will address the what, why and how of these changes. It will also highlight the current trends in language teaching that research has proven to work in enhancing language learning.
