Presently professor of sociology and coordinator, Global Studies Programme. Studied sociology at BHU(MA), JNU(M Phil) and Univ. of Chicago(Ph D). Teaches courses about polity and society in India South Asian social thought and media. Invited as visiting scholar by Kashmir University, Albert Ludwig University, Humboldt University, Johannes Keppler University, MSH(Paris), FLACSO(Beunos Aires), and Tufts University (USA). A good number of students have worked and are working with him as M Phil, Ph D and Post-Doc. students about various aspects of power, culture, poverty, society, media and social change, including globalization. His current research work includes political sociology of India, poverty and society, building global democracy, Ayurveda and globalisation, limits of cultural globalization, and problems of LPG approach in India. His publications include State and Society in India, Nation-building in India, Understanding Globalization and Emerging India, India Chronic Poverty Report, Quest for Participatory Democracy, Tibet Source Book, Parivartan Ki Rajniti Aur Rajniti Ka Parivartan, Samkalin Rajniti, and Lohia Ke Sau Baras. He has also been Secretary of Indian Sociological Society, President of Federation of Central Universities Teachers Association, and Chair, Centre for Study of Social Systems (SSS) at JNU.
