The Montgomery Montgomery-Baker Baker House. This was one of the first homes in the City of Ojai. It is located on Matilija St., but originally its entrance was on Ojai Avenue. It was built by pioneer John Montgomery in 1874. At that time, Mr. Montgomery purchased most of what is now the City of Ojai from Royce Surdham. The house was later owned by Edwin Baker, who made several additions in 1886. For many years it was Clausen’s Funeral Home before the new facility was constructed next door.

2

Presbyterian Manse. This building was constructed to house the acting minister of the Presbyterian congregation. The original manse burned down in the 1917 fire. This replacement was designed by Mead and Requa in 1919. Most recently the building served as L’Auberge Restaurant.

3

El Roblar Hotel. The hotel was built under the direction of Mr. Edward Libbey. It was part of his downtown improvement project, although it was completed three years after the Arcade and Post Office. This photograph was taken from the Post Office Tower, looking west at the El Roblar Hotel and Catholic Church behind it. In the early 1950s the hotel was renovated and renamed “The Oaks Hotel.” Today it is the “Oaks Spa.”

4

Smith Hobson House. The original Hobson house was built in 1907 in the Craftsman Style. During their Ojai Smith-Hobson make-over, the firm of Mead & Requa was commissioned to renovate the home’s exterior in the MissionRevival Style. The building now serves as the Ojai City Hall.

5

Ojai Grammar School. The Ojai Grammar School was designed by Santa Paula architect Roy Wilson. It replaced the two-story wooden, Victorian structure, which was moved to the back of the property. (You can see the tower of the old building behind the pillars.) The auditorium was added in 1933. Today, the old Ojai grammar school serves as the OUSD district offices.

6

Roy Wilson Buildings. This is the 1929 Nordhoff High School building, designed by Roy Wilson in Mission-Revival style. In 1967 the school became Matilija Junior High School.

7

James Moore House. Neutra Neutra’ss Moore House on Foothill Road is a widely recognized Midcentury Modern masterpiece. Neutra and other mid-century modern architects used an open floorplan and large windows to open the house up internally and bring the beauty of the valley into the house. Previous architectural styles saw the relationship of the structure to nature externally…from the outside. Modern architecture saw that relationship from the inside looking out. Neutra and his close friend Rudolf Schindler inspired a whole new generation of post-War post War modern architects.

8

Grey Gables of Ojai. In 1954 Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus moved to Ojai and established Grey Gables as the prototype for a new kind of retirement community. It was featured at the 1964 New York World’s Fair as the future of retirement living in America. It was here at Grey Gables that Dr. Andrus founded AARP in 1958. When AARP’s membership reached 400,000 in 1964 she moved its offices to Long Beach; today the organization is headquartered in Washington DC with over 40 million members. Currently the facility operates as The Gables.

9

The Acacias. In 1959, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus and her new Ojai Ojai-based based organization organization—AARP—built AARP built this revolutionary nursing home. It was one of the first non-profit nursing homes funded by older Americans to meet the health needs of older Americans. It was the first nursing home based on gerontology research, with staff trained in the field of gerontology. It also had apartments in the back—the Andrus Apartments—that were America’s first assisted-living facility. Today it is the Los Robles Care Center.

10

Current Presbyterian Church. Carleton Winslow beat out Wallace Neff and local architect Austen Pierpont for the commission to design Ojai’s new Presbyterian Church. It’s tower is reminiscent of Bertram Goodhue’s Balboa Park, on which Winslow served as an architect.

11

Ojai City Garage. Ed Keith renovated his City Garage to match the Mission style of the Arcade and Pergola. For many years the building has housed the Ojai Cleaners.

12

Isis Theater. This was the City City’ss first Mission-Revival Mission Revival building, predating Libbey Libbey’ss downtown renovation by 3 years. The Isis Theater was built by one of Ojai’s most successful developers, J.J. Burke. It is also one of the city’s oldest businesses; today it operates as the Ojai Playhouse.

13

Ojai Art Center. Austen Pierpont ran the family family’ss Pierpont Inn during his younger years, but he developed his architectural skills in the process. In spite of only having a degree in civil engineering he became a versatile and successful architect. He designed the Ojai Valley Inn as a 1934 addition to Libbey’s country club and golf course. He converted Libbey’s stable into a Spanish hacienda, he designed the Art Center, Libbey Bowl, Elmer Friend’s service station at the corner of Fox and Ojai Avenue, the Rainbow Bridge building, and several structures at Thacher School. He expanded the Ojai post office, and he designed manyhomes throughout the valley. He was also the steward of Libbey Park for many years in his role as President of the Ojai Civic Association.

14

Thacher Memorial Library. A driving force behind Nordhoff’s Nordhoff s community library was Sherman Day Thacher, the founder and headmaster of the Thacher School. He not only donated most of the books, but he gave a large cash donation as well. In return, the library was named after Sherman’s brother--George Thacher-who was one of the many invalids who came to the valley to be cured…and one of the many who died shortly after arriving. The building was originally located where the Art Center is now, but was later moved to Lyon Street.

15

Oak Glen Cottages. A mile or so east of town were the Oak Glen Cottages, started by William McKee. It was the Valley’s first resort, catering to those who came looking for a cure. The Oak Glen Cottages had one of Ventura County’s first golf courses. It later operated as The Gally Cottages, and is now a private residence.

16

Krotona Institute. When Albert P. Warrington and the Theosophist Krotona Colony followed Krishnamurti to Ojai in 1924, Warrington wanted the buildings to reflect Mr. Libbey’s vision. He first approached Wallace Neff to design Krotona. Neff was too expensive, so Warrington hired Robert Stacy-Judd. Above is the front entrance to the library. The large assembly hall on the far right was added later by Santa Paula architect Roy Wilson.

17

Ojai Pergola. Libbey bought up all the businesses on the south side of Ojai Avenue and created civic center park. These arches, connected by a wisteria-covered pergola, were grand entrances, through which cars could enter the park. With the post office tower, they also completed the City Beautiful principle of an axial design with convergence on a dominant monumental form. The current pergola was reconstructed from Requa’s original plans.

18

Ojai Library. The new Ojai library was designed by Carleton Winslow. Winslow had been an assistant to Bertram Goodhue, who designed most of Balboa Park’s Spanish-style buildings for the 1915-16 Panama-California Exposition in San Diego. The library is one of the few buildings in the Valley that actually reflects secular Spanish and Mexican architecture from the Spanish period…

19

Maravilla Improvement Company. This was Mr. Libbey Libbey’ss real estate offices for his Arbolada development. Today it is the Library’s second-hand book store, Twice-Told Tales.

20

Masonic Lodge. Berkeley Brandt was a Chicago architect who moved to Ojai in 1923. Today it is a private residence.

21

Old Liberal Catholic Church. John Roine was an Ojai architect who moved to the valley with the Krotona Colony; he designed several buildings around town. This redwood church—the Liberal Catholic Church—was designed by Roine in 1929. Roine was also the Church’s first minister. It was actually built in Meiners Oaks, near Krotona, but in 1949 it was moved across the valley to its present location in Ojai’s East End.

22

Ojai Valley School’s School s Frost Hall. Frank Frost, a wealthy Ojai resident, convinced Mr. Libbey that people would not buy his Arbolada lots unless there was a quality private school in the neighborhood, so Libbey donated the land and part of the funds to build Ojai Valley School--a progressive school based on the educational philosophy of Edward Yeomans. Wallace Neff was hired to design the first buildings. This building was named after Frank Frost.

23

Boyd Club. The Jack Boyd Memorial Club served as a social and recreational center for the men of the Ojai Valley. Samuel M. Ilsley was a popular Santa Barbara architect who contributed several fine Craftsman structures to the valley around the turn of the century, including the Boyd Club, the Foothills Hotel, and several buildings at Thacher School. He designed many prominent homes in Montecito and Santa Barbara, and is said to have designed the first hotel at The San Ysidro Ranch. The Boyd Club was moved to Sarzotti Park around 1960.

29

Willard Hall Francis House. Willard Hall Francis built this north Signal Street house for himself and his family in 1940. He was one of the younger pre-WWII modern architects; he studied under Frank Lloyd Wright and was influenced by him. He was also an accomplished artist, and very involved with the new Ojai Art Center during its early years in the 1940s.
