June 30, 2013 Pastor Jim Cecy “OPEN HEART! OPEN DOOR!” Principles of Biblical Hospitality (Part Two) Review of Part One Romans 12:13 commands us as believers to be “practicing hospitality”...

Biblical hospitality is not a spiritual gift — given to just a few. Biblical hospitality is a responsibility — given to us all. ALL OF US are to be pursuing getting better at biblical hospitality!

I. WHAT IS BIBLICAL HOSPITALITY? A. Biblical hospitality is NOT entertaining family and friends. B. Biblical hospitality IS entertaining people we do not know. Hospitality = Greek: philoxenia = a lover of strangers 1. We are to practice hospitality toward believers — even those we do not know very well. 2. We are to practice hospitality toward unbelievers — even those we do not know very well. II. WHY PRACTICE BIBLICAL HOSPITALITY? Reason #1. Hospitality is commanded by God. Reason #2. Hospitality is an evidence of spiritual maturity. Reason #3. Hospitality reflects a grateful heart. Reason #4. Hospitality has great effect on people. THE SEVEN STEPS OF HOSPITALITY EVANGELISM Step #1. God opens our HEARTS. Step #2. We open our HOMES. Step #3. Our guests open their EARS. Step #4. We open our MOUTHS. Step #5. God opens their HEARTS. Step #6. They open their MOUTHS. Step #7. The Good News spreads from HOME to HOME.

Now in Part Two III. GUIDELINES FOR PRACTICING BIBLICAL HOSPITALITY

Guideline #1. Provide adequate food and comfortable lodging

cf. Deuteronomy 10:18-19

Philemon 1:22 “...prepare me a lodging...”

James 2:15-16 “If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, and one of you shall say to them, ‘Go in peace and be filled,’ and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is it?” Proverbs 15:17 “Better is a dish of vegetables where love is than a fattened ox and hatred with it.”

Romans 15:32 “...so that I may come to you in joy by the will of God and find refreshing rest in your company.” Guideline #2. Follow the Golden Rule of Hospitality Leviticus 19:33-34 “...and you shall love him (i.e. the stranger) as yourself.” Deuteronomy 10:19 “...show your love for the alien...”

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Guideline #3. Include them in your religious activities cf. Numbers 15:16; Josh. 8:35; Leviticus 19:34

Guideline #4. Provide protection for them

Psalm 146:9 “The Lord protects the stranger…”

Deut. 24:17 “You shall not pervert the justice due an alien...remember that the Lord your God redeemed you...” Guideline #5. Do it with a good attitude

1 Peter 4:9 “Be hospitable to one another without complaint. (Greek: goggusmos = not grumbling, holding a grudge or murmuring).”

IV. GUIDELINES FOR RECEIVING HOSPITALITY

Guideline #1. Eat and drink what your hosts set before you

Luke 10:7-8 “And stay in that house eating and drinking what they give you...eat what is set before you.” Luke 10:8 “Whatever city you enter and they receive you, eat what is set before you...”

1 Corinthians 10:27 “If one of the unbelievers invites you, and you wish to go, eat everything that is set before you, without asking questions for conscience sake.”

Guideline #2. Don’t eat too much

Guideline #3. Don’t come too often or stay too long

Proverbs 23:1-2 “...consider carefully what is before you; and put a knife to your throat, if you are a man of great appetite.” Proverbs 25:17 “Let your foot rarely be in your neighbor’s house. Lest he become weary of you and hate you.”

Concluding Challenge:

“Hospitality, however, seeks to minister. It says, ‘This home is not mine. It is truly a gift from my Master. I am His servant and I use it as He desires.’ Hospitality does not try to impress, but to serve.” (Karen Burton Mains) “This morning opportunity knocked but by the time I opened all the locks, it was gone.” Suggestions for Practicing Hospitality • • • • • • • • • • • •

We are saying to the world...“Yes, we will come to you. But you are also welcome to come to us. Come anytime you want!”
