Prior to the start of the year, our mission was to identify the ‘What’, as in “What we will be working on to continue our path of success?” Our instructional teams have put in the hard work to develop professional development and instructional focus to meet the following goals: Increase the percentage of students who meet A-G graduation requirements.

Increase the percentage of students who are “exempt” as a result of our College Early Assessment Program (EAP) through CA Assessment for Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP), SAT and AP exams. Reduce the number of Ds and Fs across the student population. Support students’ efforts to maximize academic potential.

Provide professional development for all staff. Meet all student academic benchmarks and progress goals as identified by the state; especially to meet the needs of our demographic subgroups. The next step in this process is identifying the ‘How’, as in “How will we accomplish these goals?” Last year, our team emphasized the importance of connecting students to their future college or career, connecting all subject areas for common goals and communicating with all students and parents to strengthen their connection to school. It’s our mission this year to strengthen existing processes and refine our practices to ensure we’re making progress towards our goals. We must be measured and inclusive in our strategies to support our teams in this evolution. Our Guidance team will use our Aeries Analytics Student Information System, to identify student’s atrisk, assign interventions and communicate with Student Study Teams to ensure academic success. Students that may need further interventions can then be served by our MultiTiered Systems of Support. As a service oriented leader, my commitment is to understanding what makes Fountain Valley successful, and how to draw on the strengths and leadership of our staff to propel us on the right track to accomplish these needs. Our Parent University series is a great way to stay connected to supporting your student as well. Please visit ParentUniversity.wix.com to find out more information about upcoming events. Our Fountain Valley College and Career Day is coming up on October 14th, a great way for students to explore the many paths of their postsecondary education. Stay tuned for the exciting list of Fall activities, Athletic events and opportunities to help your student connect and succeed here at Fountain Valley. Go Barons!

Per district policy, students must have a Dr.’s note for every health/illness absence once your student has had 14 health related absences. Every student is to have a completely filled out emergency card on file in the Health Office. Please notify your child’s Guidance Specialist when your phone numbers change. Students must complete 4 semesters of P.E. (physical education). If your student cannot take P.E. for a medical reason, a physician’s note must be received in the Health Office. When students are ill/injured and need to go home, parent/guardian must sign them out through the Health Office. Students are not to call/text parents from the classroom. Students that drive will not be allowed to drive themselves home if they are complaining of lightheadedness or dizziness. If your student is suspected of a head injury/concussion, a physician’s (M.D. or D.O.) clearance is required in order to go back to participating (Education Code 49475). College and Career Center News COLLEGE ADMISSION TESTING Seniors can test through the December test date to qualify for 4-year college admission. The SAT Reasoning test w/writing and the ACT w/ writing test are equivalent in the eyes of the college admission office. SAT Subject tests are required by some four-year colleges and some private universities. They are no longer required by the UC System, however they can help set apart your application and most admissions officers still “strongly recommend” a SAT Subject Test for certain majors. Check the Admissions Requirements at the colleges you apply.

CSU and UC applications will be available online October 1st and have a submission deadline of November 30th.

Mrs. Wakeman completes the Counselor Recommendations, not your Guidance Specialist

The SAT changes in May 2016 ACT Test Dates Registration Deadline September 12th August 7th October 24th October 18th December 12th November 6th Register online at: www.actstudent.org COLLEGE APPLICATIONS CSU Applications will be available online October 1st and have a submission deadline of November 30th. UC Applications are from Nov. 1 -30th Private and Out of State college application availability and deadlines vary. Applications can be found on the college websites. Students are responsible to obtain their own application information. Pay strict attention to deadlines! The Career Center is hosting a UC Application Workshop for students on Monday October 5th at 2:00pm in the Library. That same evening we will host UC Parent Night at 6:30pm in our Cafeteria. Mr. Mason Hill, UC Santa Barbara Admissions Officer will lead these events. On Tuesday, October 20th Cal State Long Beach will lead a CSU Parent Information Night at 6:30pm in our Cafeteria. PRIVATE SCHOOL APPLICATION RECOMMENDATIONS (Common App) Be sure to contact your teachers and Mrs. Wakeman for recommendations at least one month before the application is due. Mrs. Wakeman completes the Counselor Recommendations, not your Guidance Specialist. Students must have a list of their activities and two comment sheets from teachers on file in the Career Center. Come to the Career Center to pick up a Secondary School Report packet to give to teachers and request this information. This information is in addition to the normal teacher recommendations required by most private schools. The Common App also requires an Official Transcript uploaded with the application. (UC and CSU do not require a transcript with the application, save your money!) You may request transcripts from www.parchment.com the first two transcripts are free.

Seniors, sophomores and freshmen students will be participating in our College and Career Day on Wednesday Oct. 14th. Many of the college representatives are the Admissions Officers who will be reading and looking at our student’s college applications.

PSAT All juniors will be taking the PSAT on Wednesday Oct. 14 at FVHS. Juniors who score well may qualify for National Merit Recognition and/or scholarship opportunities. The PSAT is the “Official” Practice SAT and can provide valuable information on a student’s strengths and skills or what areas they need more support in for the SAT. Please listen to future announcements for details.

While our juniors are taking the PSAT our sophomores and freshmen will be taking the New SAT Challenge presented by Kaplan. The New SAT Challenge provides a sample of the kinds of questions that will be on the new 2016 SAT as outlined by College Board. This is a self-scored challenge and students can see what kinds of questions they are great at and which question types were more challenging.

Coastline Regional Occupational Program

ROP classes provide technical education and sequential learning; designed to improve academic skills.

We are in full swing of the 15/16 Fountain Valley High School Fall Semester. By now student’s schedules are solid and they are seriously into studying. So the question is how can we help students maintain their motivation during their high school years? One way is to help them explore career choices. That is where Coastline ROP comes in. ROP is a state-funded public education, providing career technical education and guidance to met identified education standards and industry needs. ROP is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and is part of the Huntington Beach Unified School Districts. ROP classes provide technical education and sequential learning designed to improve academic skills. It outlines for students a course of study that combines classroom instruction with hands-on learning. Courses taken through ROP earn the students credits toward high school graduation. Some classes satisfy a-g requirement for the UC and Cal State Universities. Students can participate in courses that offer internships Along with the opportunity to experience careers that may assist in choosing college majors and enhance college admission applications. Classes are held in business, and on high school campus located within the five participating districts. Some are even offered during the bell schedule on FVHS campus. Coastline ROP is continually updating its course offerings to remain current with the labor market demands. Along with working to hold our classes in locations that will be convenient for our student population. We offer classes in 15 different industry sectors; Agriculture and Natural Resources, Arts, Media, and Entertainment, Health Science and Medical Technology, Public Services, Transportation just to name a few. Fountain Valley also offers on our campus during the bell schedule, eight classes that meet the UC and California State University A-G requirements. It is necessary to take these classes for two consecutive semesters, so if considering any of this classes, please register in the fall semester. So as you can see we have something for everyone. I only listed a few of the industry sectors which we offer classes in. Our courses are offered each semester, including a limited number of summer options, offering 5-10 elective credits for each completed course. We are continually registering for the upcoming semesters. So if your student wants more information on ROP career preparation and internships courses or is ready to sign up for a ROP class, please have them see me in the Career Center, If you have questions you can email me at [email protected] or I can be reached by phone (714) 962-3301 ext. 4436. Choosing the right job, the right college, or the right career path can be a long and difficult endeavor. Education, experience and exposure can make the process easier.

Fountain Valley High School 1966 — 2016 In 1966, Fountain Valley High School opened its doors and began the tradition of excellence and pride that we'll be celebrating all year long. This 2015-2016 school year, we invite you to join us for a few campus and community events. In honor of each decade the school was open, the last Thursday of each month will be a Throwback Thursday. We want all students and staff to dress in accordance with the prevailing trends and styles of each era the school has been open, beginning with the 1960s and ending with the 2010s. So get your 60s gear ready for September 24; scrounge around in those dusty closets and thrift stores for the most perfect outfit of the day. Homecoming this year will have added meaning as we encourage everyone to get ahold of all Barons past

Throwback Thursdays September 24th - 1960s October 29th - 1970s November 19th - 1980s December - 17th - 1990s January 28th - 2000s February 25th - 2010s

and present, and share in the celebration by watching our students battle Mira Mesa High School. The Homecoming football game will be at Huntington Beach High School on Friday October 2. Welcome back home again Barons. This spring semester, we'll be hosting a community-wide open house event at Fountain Valley High School on Friday March 4; it will expand our usual culture faire and add a historic twist. For any further details and questions, please email the 50th Anniversary Committee chairman, Mike Eich, at [email protected]
