As we approach the Winter Holiday Season and the New Year, it’s fun to reflect back on what has transpired the past year as we look forward to 2015. In 2014 we completed our WASC accreditation process and received a six year accreditation approval with a 3 year report, experienced SBAC testing for the first time, and graduated an outstanding class of seniors who received scholarship offers surpassing all previous graduating class by a large margin. In the fall, we opened our doors to a new class of eager freshman students bringing our enrollment total number to 3,700 students, and promoted a theme for the year of “Making Connections.” We hosted a well-attended Back to School Night in September, facilitated an outstanding school wide College and Career Interim Principal Kirk Kennedy Day event on October 15th and once again demonstrated our school culture with an excellent community Glow Show event the night before the Bell Game with Edison High School. Although these are only a few events, they are indicators that reflect the school’s progress towards the transition to Common Core State Standards, the ongoing staff commitment to instructional collaboration and the pride our students and staff demonstrate for Fountain Valley High School in the areas of academics and extracurricular activities. Fountain Valley students, faculty members, parents and the community partners that support us each are truly committed to the Baron for Life philosophy. In fact, a recent assessment and report of our parental school involvement to the School’s Site Council demonstrated an outstanding level of participation from our parents and community in many different aspects of the school. This year’s theme of “Making Connections” which was presented to the staff by the Professional Development Committee in August was designed to encourage on-going positive relationships with our students and community, to drive school culture as an essential element of student success and provide collaboration opportunities for our staff to share instructional practices and improve student learning. Supporting this philosophy, the committee is currently organizing on-going teacher training for Canvas Technology, a program initiated school-wide this year. They are discussing plans for a school-wide activity in the spring focused on presenting and evaluating instructional practices in each department that will expand teacher knowledge and instructional methods awareness. As Common Core State Standards continue to be major emphasis of instruction, the district office and our school is focused on upgrading our schools technology infrastructure and classroom computers for students and teachers. Recently, the school Bingo program partnered with our school to purchase 80 Acer Chromebook computers and two carts to increase the technology available to students in the classroom a donation of $29,000. The district office is planning to provide additional technology at our school site, to increase the number of individual devices so our eleventh grade students can take the SBAC exams all at the same time, with the intention that the technology will also be used in classrooms on a regular basis. Additionally, to support students we are also in the process of upgrading teacher technology in the classrooms by upgrading all of the technology in the English classrooms where SBAC testing will occur. Essentially we have a great number of ongoing initiatives at FVHS to provide our students with the best educational experience possible. As we continue to focus on instructional practices, school culture and making connections, I hope you have time to visit the school and attend our school/community activities. These include like athletic events, performing arts performances, parent information nights, or any program event that is open to parents and community members which will allow you to experience our Baron 4-Life culture in person. Happy Holidays to all of you and remember, “Once a Baron, Always a Baron 4 Life.”

Grad Night Meeting Dates:

January 7 February 4 March 4 April 1

Grad Night News Grad Night is NOT an excuse for a party. It is an idea begun in the 1970’s and adopted at FVHS in 1988. We have carried on for now our 28th year and it is still held on campus. Grad Night shows emerging adults-our graduates- that alcohol and other drugs are not needed to have a good time. Our young people are our greatest asset and hope for the future; we must do all we can to protect them. This year’s Grad Night theme is “Light-Up The Knight.”

All meetings are at

In January and when the holidays are over and the memories remain, it is time to turn our attention to the many functions surrounding graduation. Grad Night needs the parents of every grade level to become involved. We need you to give as little or as much of your time as you can. The wheels are turning and we are moving forward. Please consider being a part of this event if you want it to continue for years to come. Many of our officers and committee chairs will be leaving as their seniors graduate.

7:00pm in the Faculty Dining Room

Our Executive Board is in place: President—Mary Curry, Co-Vice President Media—Andie Jacobsen, Co-Vice President Food—Maribeth Goldsby, Co-Vice President Set-up & Tear Down—Kevin Mack, Co-Vice President School Liaison—Kate Tran, Treasurer—Michelle Anderson, Co-Secretary—Annette Gilbert, Co-Secretary—Christine Doerr.

May 6 June 3

If you have any questions or need additional information please contact John Johlic jtjonlic@hotmail or call at 714-465-9020. WE NEED YOUR HELP!

The following was taken from a national website called GradNight.org. To read the entire article click here.

Why Have A Grad Night Celebration? “The spirit of Grad Night has spread throughout the United States. Grad Nights are provided by a committed group of parents joining together with other community members to give their high school graduates a safe, sober, and spectacular graduation celebration. The two highest risk nights for High school students are Prom and Graduation nights. Peer pressure is highest on these two nights. The philosophy and ideals behind the Grad Night movement are interlinked with providing an event that is safe, sober, and spectacularly fun. More than "just a party," Grad Night is a commitment by parents, school and the community to conduct a great, "once in a lifetime" celebration. Grad Night is a unique and spectacular celebration that is alcohol and drug free. It builds a spirit of togetherness among the graduates as they celebrate with old friends for one last time. A sense of community is developed as everyone works to keep the graduates entertained and safe on potentially the most dangerous night of their lives. Grad Night celebrations are succeeding because of the commitment of the parents, the backing of school and local governments, and the generous support of the communities. The graduates like celebrating all night with their friends and, at many schools; this has become the way to celebrate this special occasion.”

California High School Exit Exam—CAHSEE On March 17th and 18th of 2015, Fountain Valley High School will administer the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) to all 10th grade students and some 11th and 12th grade students that have not completed the testing requirement. It is extremely important that we have outstanding attendance on both days. The next opportunity to take the exam will not occur until May. Because we want reliable information, we need our students to approach the testing process with their best effort. To assist us in obtaining the best effort from each student, we are requesting that all parents emphasize that each student receives plenty of sleep each night, arrive at school on time and are mentally prepared for testing. Our teachers will prepare them in the classroom with a variety of instructional practices for both English and Mathematics. As a Public Education high School we strive to teach our students with a challenging and rewarding educational experience. The CAHSEE test is one of the data measurements we use to determine how our students are learning. If you have any questions regarding the above information you can email me at [email protected]. Together we will continue to provide our students with a great high school experience. Go Barons!

Parent Student Portal (Aeries)

Both students AND parents need to each have a portal account in order to complete registration for the 2015-2016 school year.

Have you signed up for Aeries? Parents, it is especially important that you complete this process. Each student will need to have their parent or guardian log into Aeries in order to register for next school year (2015-2016). Don’t wait until the last minute—sign up now! Data Confirmation (updating emergency card contact information and any mandatory district forms) must be completed through the Aeries parent account not the student’s. Online registration dates will be available during Spring 2015. Our district has a step-by-step tutorial to help you sign up for Aeries. Click here or go to hbuhsd.edu and select Parents & Students, Parent Student Portal, and then click on the Aeries Sign Up for Parents & Students. If you do not have your “Verification Pass Code VPC” that was mailed to your home address at the beginning of the school year, you or your student must come into the front office and ask for it—we cannot give this information to you over the phone or by email.

15-16 Orientation and Pre-Registration In February, students will begin working with their guidance specialists and the college and career specialist regarding next year's course selections. For the first time, students will be using Aeries for online course selection requests. They will receive specific information on how to do this in their English classes during February and March. Every student must have an active Aeries account to sign-up for their classes for the next school year (2015-2016).

Coastline Regional Occupational Program By participating in the ROP program students will have the opportunity to get first hand experience in the field they are considering for their future career.

Many adults find themselves in unfulfilling work situations, as many as one in four according to a recent survey by CareerBuilder.com. They may find that it is financially meeting their every need, but it does not necessarily take care of their emotional, social or creative needs. Given those statistics it is important to support our students in career paths that will lead them to fulfilling occupations be it College Prep, Career Tech or perhaps both. With the plethora of choices for high school students to make regarding their future, we need to provide several avenues for them to make the choices that will be right for them. Students attending Fountain Valley High School have the opportunity to experience both career paths, academic and career technical to take the correct path to a rewarding and fulfilling future. Some teachers of Zen believe that you need to take action to achieve your goal, they describe action in this way, “If one wants to get to the top of a mountain, just sitting at the foot thinking about it will not bring one there. It is by making the effort of climbing up the mountain, step by step that eventually the summit is reached.” In this case the summit is our student’s future. ROP may just provide the boost to make the effort. ROP is a public education service that provides practical, hands-on career preparation and career guidance in all aspects of the world today. ROP offers classes in 15 different Industry Sectors; Agriculture and Natural Resources, Arts, Media, and Entertainment, Business and Finance, Education Health Science and Medical Technology, Engineering and Architecture, just to name a few We also offer several classes which meet the A-G requirements for the UC & Cal State system. ROP offers more than 75 Career Preparation Courses that will provide your student with the knowledge and skills to get their career off to a good start! Many classes offer internships in local business, which will look most impressive on any students application be it for college or employment. Internships help develop your business skills, communication skills and possible provide you with an array of future professional contacts. By participating in the ROP program students will have the opportunity to get first hand experience in the field they are considering for their future career. For those who or not sure what profession they will pursue ROP gives them the opportunity to explore their choices. And as an added bonus to all of this is they can earn 5-10 credits towards their high school graduation depending on the class. Your seniors have one more opportunity to take an ROP class during the spring 2015 semester. We offer classes Fall/Spring and a few classes during the summer months. We are currently recruiting for our summer and fall 2015 school term. But, it is never too early get further information on the Program. Students must be 16 years old or a Junior or Senior to enroll. Theatre Production—Julius Caesar High School From December 11 through December 13, FVHS was transformed into Julius Caesar High School (a student written retelling of Shakespeare’s play) by the cast and crew of the theatre department. Four sold out shows (with waiting lists), transported audiences into the world of high school politics where jealousy, innuendo, gossip, and friendship took center stage. Upon arrival to the show, audience members (aka students) were given a “schedule of classes” and instantly became part of Julius Caesar High School’s student body. Under the ever-watchful eagle eyes of school supervision, (Taylor Hospodarec and Leila Majd-Faridi), theatre-goers were scolded if they did not hurry to class, or were talking when they should remain quiet! School Counselor Mrs. Sampson (Morgan Capristo), ensured that all students could feel safe and secure, and offered words of encouragement to everyone who was feeling a little sad. During 1st period, we learned that a school-wide talent show would be taking place that was sponsored by the Senate. The winner of the show would become the new school Emperor (or Empress) and gain all the associated prestige that went with that title. Senate President Marissa (Ariana Isbell) was hoping to shake things up a bit by ensuring that Popular-Kid-Jason (Jake Wells), did not win again! Her fellow senate members Monica (Ashley Leal) and Gabby (Haley Mindrum) were OK with Jason not making a repeat visit to the winner’s stand, and were even taking bribes from other students who entered the contest, such as book-smart Angel (Emma Dorbin), who promised to do all of the senators’ homework in exchange for their votes! Meanwhile, Jason’s jealous brother Chase (Michael Peters), plotted his own rise to the top of the student body. Chase went completely out of control when he was caught on the high school’s news channel getting ready to ask the love of his life—Brianna (Maddie Schultz)—to the Spring Dance when his brother swooped in and asked her first. Of course Jason had no idea that Chase had feelings for Brianna, but from Chase’s perspective, this was the last straw. Through twists and turns, three more class periods (the audience walked from class to class), and constant miscommunication, the audience finally ended up at the school-wide chaotic talent show, complete with hysterical and memorable performances by several of the cast members, and the reactions of panic-stricken show managers. The talent show was entertaining all on its own. But, tragedy has reached its pinochle and Jason has fallen. It is only after the impassioned speech by Matthew (Tyler Kohanek), that the student body and the senate realize that they have wronged Jason, who truly was a friend to all. In the end, Matthew himself was crowned Emperor, for demonstrating what friendship and loyalty is.

Glow Show

Throughout the school year FVHS ASB continues to provide students with fun activities such as the Glow Show, Pack the Gym, Ping Pong Tournament and Hot Cocoa Event!

Story by Kris Nguyen On Thursday, October 30th, the night before our famous Battle of the Bell, over 3000 students, staff, and community members gathered at Fountain Valley High School for the annual Glow Show, our biggest night-time pep rally of the year. Hosted by Sam Asuega and Dominic Nguyen with the planning effort of ASB Assembly Commissioners Kris Nguyen, Monica Law, and Sarah Djafri, the show united the school and community and hyped up the Barons' pride and spirit. Students who came early were treated with glow-in-the-dark face paint and up to 6 different choices of food trucks. The stage erupted as Mr. Schultz roused the crowd with his "FV Forever Victorious" speech and Varsity Football head coach Ray Fenton instilled in the audience what it meant to be a Baron with the cheer "I Believe That We Will Win." Unlike any previous Glow Shows, this year's show also featured orchestra and colorguard, making it the first time orchestra has participated in any school-wide assembly. However, the most exciting act of the night was the fire knives performance by one of the MCs, Sam Asuega. Dressed in the traditional Polynesian fire dance attire, Sam skillfully captivated the audience with his charm and his yearlong experience performing with the TUPUA production dance group. Although Glow Show only lasted 3 hours, the spirit and energy of the show was clearly evident in the stadium the next day as our Varsity football team took on the Edison Chargers.

Pack the Gym Story by Carly Perri On January 9th, FVHS ASB will be hosting it's annual Pack the Gym Dance, themed “Jam Out in your 80’s Workout.” ASB is very excited to be putting on their 3rd dance of the year. The dance will take place after the boys varsity basketball game. The Barons take on Marina High School at 7pm. To enter the dance, students are required to attend the game and must be in the gym by 7:30pm. Presale tickets will be sold for $3 in the financial office from January 6-9 at lunch. Tickets are $6 at the door. Pack the Gym is a fun way to welcome FVHS students back to school and encourages school spirit and support for our athletics and activities.

Ping Pong Tournament Story by Kevin Ly On November 17-21, Fountain Valley High School held their annual ping pong tournament in the gymnasium. Students and teachers were able to compete with each other and it was a very competitive battle between the players. We had a total of 52 contestants as well as 2 teachers. We had a great outcome this year as many students came to support their friends play in the tournament. It was very organized and many students had a great time. Our 2014 Ping Pong tournament winner, Brian Tran won a $20 Jamba Juice gift card and battled many skilled players like last year’s semi-finalist, Matt Gemeinhardt. All the students who participated in this year’s tournament had a great time and said it was a good event held by ASB.

Hot Cocoa Event Story by Kevin Ly On November 16, Fountain Valley High School ASB held a hot chocolate event in the morning before first period started. ASB and the cafeteria worked together to sell hot chocolate to its fellow students. It was a success! Many students came out and enjoyed how the hot chocolate tasted. There was good feedback on the hot chocolate and many students liked how there was holiday music going on and how it was free. It was a great outcome and we will definitely do this event again in the future!
