Nature Serves As Teacher For Lake Geneva 6th Graders May 2, 2017 (Lake Geneva) – Learning doesn’t always need to take place in the classroom. The 49th Annual Lake Geneva Middle School (LGMS) Outdoor Education Program brought lessons to life for sixth graders during the week of April 24. Students spent two full days in the great outdoors at YMCA Camp Maclean in Burlington participating in a variety of science, physical education and character-building activities. Favorites included fishing; collecting organisms from a swamp to observe and identity under microscopes; archery; competing in relays that simulate life on the prairie; building campfires; making butter; using a GPS to find hidden objects in the woods; and achieving personal goals on a rock climbing wall and high ropes course. “This is such a unique experience for our students, said LGMS principal Grant Strobel. “Nature is a powerful teacher, and there are so many things that kids can learn hands-on outdoors that they cannot learn sitting in a classroom.” The school’s outdoor education program has been a part of the LGMS sixth grade curriculum since 1968. For many kids, it’s the only camp-like experience they’ll ever have. “It’s an enrichment opportunity that gives all of our students chances to try and learn new things and connect what they’re learning in the classroom to the real world,” Strobel said.
