SUSPECT #1:

14-year-old male, Milpitas resident

SUSPECT #2:

14-year-old male, Milpitas resident

On Thursday, October 26, 2017, at approximately 12:05 P.M., students at Milpitas High School reported to the staff they had seen a student in a bathroom with a handgun. The school security staff responded to the bathroom and located a 14-year-old male with an unloaded handgun. The student also had a loaded magazine nearby in his backpack. The School Resource Officer responded shortly thereafter and took the student into custody without incident. The Milpitas High School, Pomeroy Elementary, and Russell Middle School were directed to “shelter in place” until officers could ensure the campus was safe and there were no other students involved. Once the campus was searched, the “shelter in place” was lifted. At approximately 2:15 P.M., additional students believed a different 14-year-old male student on campus was in possession of a weapon; however, no weapon was actually seen. The high school was secured again for the safety of students and staff, while officers searched for the second student. Detectives obtained information the second student was off campus in Milpitas. The second student was eventually located at a residence and did not have a weapon. Based on the initial investigation, the first student had brought the handgun to school a few days prior and had given it to the second student to hold for him. The handgun reported in both incidents was the same handgun, which was recovered in the bathroom. Both 14-year-old male students were booked into the Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall for having a firearm on school grounds and carrying a concealed weapon. The Milpitas Police would like to commend the students who came forward and reported the incident. Immediately reporting crimes helps aid with successful and safe outcomes.
