POLICY ON ROADSIDE MEMORIALS The Pike County Highway Department is responsible for maintaining the rights-of-way along various roads under its jurisdiction. This responsibility includes the approval of roadside appurtenances such as roadside memorials. In order to minimize the hazards of non-breakaway posts within the right-of-way, and in order to respectfully acknowledge the accident victim(s) while encouraging the safety of the motoring public, the following policy has been adopted: In the instance of a fatal accident along a county highway, permission for a roadside memorial may be requested from the Pike County Highway Department. Acceptable memorials shall be located near the edge of the right-of-way line and shall meet the following criteria: • mounted on a single break-away post (max. 4”x4” wooden post or an approved break-away steel post) • no more than 3 feet high • no more than 2 feet wide • be of a neutral color without lights or reflectivity • shall not be disruptive to traffic in any way Any non-conforming memorials may be removed by the highway authority. Decorations will be permitted for 30 days following the fatal accident. Any decorations in place after that time may be removed by the highway authority. In the case of a multiple fatality accident, memorials shall be grouped together and shall be of a similar size. It is the responsibility of the installer to properly contact JULIE to avoid conflict with any underground utilities that exist within the right-of-way. The installer will be responsible for mowing and maintaining the area in the immediate vicinity of the memorial. If the memorial is damaged in any way, it will be the responsibility of the installer to repair or replace the memorial. Pike County Highway Department will assume no responsibility for maintaining any roadside memorials. The memorial shall be maintained in a presentable, well maintained condition as determined by the County Engineer. If memorial is not kept in a presentable, well maintained condition, the memorial will be removed by the County Highway Department. Page 1 of 1
