How Is Carbon Cycled? All  life  on  earth  is  solar  powered.

Write the chemical equation for photosynthesis (you already know this…upside down and backwards!!): 6CO2 + 6H20 + Sunlight energy à C6H12O6 + O2 What ingredients do autotrophs need in order to produce glucose? Autotrophs need carbon dioxide, water, sunlight energy in order to produce glucose.

How will you set up four test tubes to provide evidence of how carbon is cycled? Materials  Needed  /  Available:

• • • • •

Snails   Elodea   Bromothymol  Blue  (control  groups)   Distilled  Water   4  test  tubes

Independent Variables: Elodea and Snails Dependent Variable: How much carbon is in it Procedure: 1. Fill all 4 test tubes with 30 mL of bromothymol blue solution. 2. One test tube is only filled with bromothymol blue. The second test tube is filled with a snail and the solution. The third test tube will contain the elodea and solution. The fourth test tube contains both elodea and snail in the solution. 3. Finally, place these 4 test tubes under the lamp for 24 hours. Hypothesis: Predict what will happen in each test tube by shading the color you think the bromothymol blue in the tubes will be in 24 hours. Include which independent variables will be applied in each tube by using text or illustration. Then explain why you think the test tube will be the color you think. Finally, use color to shade in the tube. If … then….

Because:

Test Tube 1

IF the bromothymol solution is placed under the lamp then it should remain blue because no evidence of carbon is cycled.

Bromothymol Blue Test Tube 2

If the snail in the solution is placed under the lamp then it should turn yellow because there’s large evidence of carbon cycled in it.

Snail Only Test Tube 3

If the elodea is placed in the solution under the lamp, then it should turn kind of yellow because there’s a little evidence of carbon being cycled in it.

Name  ______________________________  Date:__________  Period  ______

Elodea Only Test Tube 4

If both the snail and elodea is placed in the solution under the lamp, then it should turn into a dark yellow because a lot of evidence shows carbon is recycled in it.

Both Snail and Elodea Design a Data Table Below to organize your data: Title: The Carbon Cycle Items

Today

Tomorrow

Control

The color is a deep ocean blue.

The color remained the same deep ocean blue because there are no items affecting it.

Snail

The color is a deep ocean blue.

The color turned greenish because the snail released carbon dioxide.

Elodea

The color is a deep ocean blue.

The colored turned into a darker blue because the elodea took in all of the carbon dioxide.

Snail and Elodea

The color is a deep ocean blue.

The color turned just a little darker because as the snail releases the carbon dioxide and absorbs the oxygen from the elodea, the snail takes in the carbon dioxide and produces oxygen.

Conclusion: Test Tube 1 (only solution): The color remained the same deep ocean blue because there are no items affecting it. Test Tube 2 (snail only):The color turned greenish because the snail released carbon dioxide. Test Tube 3 (elodea only): The colored turned into a darker blue because the elodea took in all of the carbon dioxide. Test Tube 4 (snail and elodea only): The color turned just a little darker because as the snail releases the carbon dioxide and absorbs the oxygen from the elodea, the snail takes in the carbon dioxide and produces oxygen.
