INT. FUNERAL PARLOR - DAY

1

On the porcelain slab lays JUDGE SOMERS (70ish). There are various glass bottles of different hues. A Victrola spins. The Undertaker’s tools litter the counters. A young, pudgy UNDERTAKER is organizing his tools. He lays out a scalpel, tweezers and unwinds a rubber tube. WHEELER (O.S.) What do you recall about Judge Somers? Any fond memories? TOWNSFOLK #1 (O.S.) Nice man. Married me and my wife in ‘01 The Undertaker shakes out a shirt cut down the back. WHEELER (O.S.) Is there any specific memory about Judge Somers you’d care to share? He lays out a pair of black socks. TOWNSFOLK #2 Such a sweetheart. Quiet, nice man. We’re sure gonna miss him. The Undertaker combs Judge Somer’s thin white hair. WHEELER Anything specific? He applies flesh colored makeup to the Judge’s cheeks. TOWNSFOLK #2 Sweet old man. Always remembered your name. The young undertaker stands in the mirror. He is tieing a tie much too long for him. He takes it off. WHEELER (O.S.) Mr. Bradley, Joe Wheeler, Spoon River Gazette. Can I have a minute of your time? MR. BRADLEY (O.S.) Oh would you like to know about the new store?

1 WHEELER (O.S.) Actually I wanted to see what you remembered about the late Judge Somers? MR. BRADLEY (O.S.) Fine man. Did the closing on my house back when he was still just a lawyer. Friendly to the business community. WHEELER (O.S.) Anything else? Maybe something personal? MR. BRADLEY (O.S.) Sure just come down to Bradley’s next week for the grand opening.

The Undertaker’s hands are flatten the buttons on the corpse’s shirt. He pinches the creases on the corpse’s trousers like the tops of tents. He finds a change purse and puts it on the counter with the rest of the Judge’s effects. A pocket watch, a small bible, a fountain pen. 2
