A hilarious and honest book that deserves to sell well (with some serious suggestions for author Robert) By Paul A. Harrison This book is devastatingly honest and exhaustive and extremely funny. I dare not take this to the dentist's to read while waiting, because I would be bursting out laughing at every page and everyone would stare at me wondering what I was reading. Every would be actor should read it because it describes exactly what you will have to go through with hilarious examples from Robert's life. You will also be better equipped to deal with the problems you will face. Non-actors should read it because you will learn what life is like for 90 per cent of actors. This book is clearly not selling as I think it deserves and could, so here are some serious suggestions to Robert from a moderately successful author and editor: What follows are not shortcomings of the book - no-one who buys it will regret doing so.
1. Cut the price. Would be actors may not feel like paying $15 to get their delusions punctured. I know it's a fat book and you need the money, but if you cut the price say to $11.99 (always use this .99 trick when pricing, it works!) you will actually probably make more money. 2. Maybe cut it to 250 pages or less. The production cost will be lower and people who are afraid of long books will not be deterred. Also the quality and power (which is already good) will increase. Cutting stuff that you worked hard writing can hurt - but you will always have the longer version available if need be. 3. Take the brief time to copy your section titles into a full contents list. This is important, because then Amazon's "Look Inside" will show people what's in the book. 4. Dump the "101" commitment in the title. Having 101 in the title is cute, but it obviously isn't helping to sell more copies and it holds you to keeping the book long. How about "What acting is REALLY like;" subtitle "and why you shouldn't do it." This is better because it broadens the appeal to curious non-actors. 5. Be assured that this book is extremely funny for non-would-be-actors too, they all watch TV and would be interested to know what goes into it, Plus it may console them that they did not go into acting. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Must Read By PJ Hilarious. Honest. And a must read. This book is great for actors or anyone that has ever watched television. True to life By The irascibleist As someone who knocked around Hollywood for a long, long time, I've got to say that every page of this book rings true. In fact, I think that there could easily be another 101 reasons not to act (try: the Hollywood you romanticize is long gone and replaced by tacky souvenir shops that cater to sucker tourists). Todd should be hired to speak to incoming drama classes at the big acting schools. Yes, a lot of people who read his book will ignore his advice. Sure, an insignificant percentage will actually attain terrific success. But getting a strong dose of the reality of the profession would be a good thing for every acting student, and hopefully this message can be strong enough to push people already on the fence about the career to embrace amateurism while pursuing a more reasonable career. Yes, the book has some quirky vulgarity. I like it largely because I think that it honestly represents a certain type of cool, penetrating, jaded-at-times-but-not-all-the-time intelligence which is quite prevalent in L.A.
