By RollaMike This book was a delight to read as a seminary student who is often confronted with assigned textbooks that are useful but hard to read enjoyably. This book is different. It reads smoothly, the flow presented through history is understandable, and yet it is an excellent resource for advanced study. Knowledge of Biblical Hebrew enhances the reading experience, but is not necessary at all to gain greater depth of understanding of its history, especially in how it became the core structure of modern Judaism. 3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I would strongly recommend this book By David L. Steinberg This book pioneers the study of the ancient Hebrew language in its socio-cultural context. It displays a high level of scholarship over an astonishing range of related subjects and time periods. The reader will find keen insights derived from the author’s wide reading and his sociolinguistic approach. In spite of some flaws, see below, I would strongly recommend this book. Though there is necessarily a great deal of overlap, it can, with profit, be studied together with A History of the Hebrew Language by Angel Sáenz-Badillos. Approach of the Book According to the author, his approach was – … it begins with the premise that the ancient Hebrew language was part of the social fabric of the people living in the ancient eastern Mediterranean … (and) the history of a language mirrors the history of the people who speak it – or, in our present case, the people who wrote our texts…. This book will adapt the linguistic idea of the speech community to the type of evidence that we have, namely, written texts that were generated by a scribal community (see further p. 126). The history of early Hebrew thus must be shaped first of all by understanding the history of the Hebrew scribal community (or communities) and secondarily by the history of the Hebrew speech community…. A crucial premise of sociolinguistics is that the language is part of a cultural system…. (T)he study of languages can never be conducted separately from their social contexts. It would be fair to say that the author remained true to this approach through the book. Stylistic Comments Though generally readable, the book is highly repetitious mentioning the same, often important, facts repeatedly. Sometimes these repetitions take place within a few sentences. An example are the numerous overlapping references to Egyptian scribal terms, hieratic numerals etc. Also rather

numbing are the many references to the Assyrian use of Aramaic. All of these statement are correct but many are repetitive. Where was the Yale University Press editor? The study of biblical history and ancient Hebrew is cursed with too little evidence (hence the small size of the book) and with such evidence as exists being ambiguous. This allows a range of equally competent scholars to reach very different conclusions on the same issue. A common defect of scholars in these fields is to state their conclusions on a given subject and to proceed using words such as “must”, “was” or “would have been” when it would be more appropriate to use “might have been” or “could have been” etc. The author is definitely guilty of this fault. Periodization of Biblical Hebrew, Particularly the Case of “Archaic Biblical Hebrew” (ABH) For decades, Biblical Hebrew texts have been roughly divided into three chronological strata based on linguistic criteria – Archaic Biblical Hebrew (only found in poetry - c. late second to early first millennia BCE), Classical or Early Biblical Hebrew (SBH - c. ninth to sixth century BCE), and Late Biblical Hebrew (LBH - c. after the sixth century BCE). The most important research supporting this structure was done by Avi Hurvitz. The author uses this framework in this book. In the last decade this structure has been attacked by a number of scholars who maintain that the dating of Biblical Hebrew texts on the basis of language is effectively impossible. The most important book making this case is - Linguistic Dating of Biblical Texts by Ian Young, Robert Rezetko and Martin Ehrensvärd. However, in my view, the arguments against linguistic dating made in Linguistic Dating of Biblical Texts have been successfully refuted by the essays in Diachrony in Biblical Hebrew (ed. Miller-Naudé and Zevit) which demonstrate that it is indeed probable that the observable linguistic differences between Classical and Late Biblical Hebrew are due to their date of composition. However, the situation regarding ABH is murkier. Unfortunately, the section on ABH is the weakest in the book. The author depends partly on Robertson (Linguistic Evidence in Dating Early Hebrew Poetry). Evidently he has not read Robyn C. Vern’s book Dating Archaic Biblical Hebrew Poetry: A Critique of the Linguistic Arguments which successfully demolishes Robertson’s conclusions. Despite a hyper-critical review by Pat-El and Wilson-Wright (Features of Archaic Biblical Hebrew and the Linguistic Dating Debate), it is quite possible that the conclusions of Vern (quoted below) will be sustained – - No archaic linguistic feature, either singly or in combination across the range of forms, provides evidence relevant for dating the archaic poetry of the Hebrew Bible…. The presence of archaisms in the Archaic Biblical Hebrew corpus indicates a poetic style which uses linguistic forms from another period, a common feature of poetry in many cultures. - The ABH poetic corpus is typologically more representative of first millennium sources than second millennium sources. This does not imply that an individual poem cannot be of late second millennium provenance.
