HERETICS AND POLITICS: THEOLOGY, POWER, AND PERCEPTION IN THE LAST DAYS OF CBC BY THOMAS A. FUDGE PDF

The United Pentecostal Church-sponsored Conquerors Bible College was founded in Portland, Oregon in 1953. It closed abruptly in 1983. The denomination attributed the failure of the college to financial causes. Heretics and Politics argues that the financial crisis at CBC was rooted in theological controversy, church politics, conflicting models of education, and sustained suspicions of heresy. In seeking to delineate the several factors which destroyed CBC, historian Thomas A. Fudge has looked closely at the context, critically assessed a wide range of surviving documents, and taken into account the diversity of oral history. The narrative is neither an institutional history nor a biographical account. Instead, it explores the challenge of formal education within the UPC and evaluates the politics of change within that denomination in the Pacific Northwest. Both issues are assessed through the prism of CBC. The story of the last days of CBC illuminates important developments in the Pacific Northwest. The story is told against the broader canvas of events transpiring within American religious history. Heretics and Politics is the first book to deal with any aspect of the history of CBC. Its probing narrative chronicles both institutional upheaval and personal tragedy. ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

By Dale Royce I appreciate the time, effort and documented research Tom Fudge has done in at last getting this book in print. He does a good job in detailing the mood of the "purists" in the state of Oregon and the development (particularly in Oregon) of a formerly grace-filled PCI leaning district in the United Pentecostal Church into a hard-line ultra conservative one. He claims that there have always been keepers of the "truth" and makes the case, providing historical examples from other protestant organizations. His references fill the back of the book. He reveals the demise of Conqueror's Bible College as just another tragic example of Un Christ-like behavior exhibited by those purporting to uphold the "truth" towards anyone daring to hold a differing theological opinion or ecclesiological method. My definition of those days was that the Portland area pastors attitude towards the PCI view of Acts 2:38, Jerry Dillon and Wayne Nigh's eschatalogy and the manic need to control the money and students attending the local churches (there was no school church like other UPC bible

colleges) was TOXIC. The attitude that local Portland, Oregon area pastors had towards Fisher based upon their prejudices regarding their view of "truth" towards his obvious "heresy" was exposed to me personally by the assistant to the pastor in Beaverton, Oregon. About the time Fisher was forced out of Portland and moved the school campus to Vancouver he also re-named the school Cascade Bible College. The assistant to the pastor I mentioned (a "truth" bearer and ironicallly a CBC alum) told me that Fisher was moving the school to Vancouver and renaming it. He then asked me if I knew what a "Cascade was". I knew there was a punchline coming so I responded in the negative. He replied, "It is a series of falls". This if anything exposed the utter contempt and hatred held towards Fisher PRIOR to him ever leaving the ministry and entering a committed homosexual lifestyle. That he died 10 years later of AIDS only gave those upholders of the "truth" self-justification in their character assassination. I was acquainted with nearly every Portlad area pastor in my role as the Ministerial Student Association president at CBC ('77-'80). Part of the book is devoted to the late Don Fisher. It's my opinion that Fudge provides a balanced view towards Fisher's progressivism and is frank about Fisher's post-ministerial homosexuality. I wish there had been an addenum with a few chapters devoted to another closed UPC school, Jackson College of Ministries (JCM). I give the book only four stars because I thought more would be mentioned about the influence that Nigh's and Alvin Cobb's eschatalogy had from the mid-70's until the time the school closed. The author probably thought it not a primary issue, but there was (imo) more undercurrent to this issue than the book addresses. Nigh's eschatalogy put him at odds with the "truth" (ie: futurism, dispensationalism) so in the minds of the purists every other doctrine was suspect. It didn't help that the former had a PCI-view of Acts 2:38. The United Pentecostal Church's manual citing that ministers would "NOT CONTEND FOR THEIR DIFFERENT VIEWS" to the disunity of the brethren was completely lost on the Portland area purists, who in their own Phariseeical way felt that they alone held the keys to eternal life. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in knowing how "heretics" and "politics" are intertwined. It also shows how the CEO pastor position (so prevalent in the UPC) is powerful with high potential for abuse. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. insert any other religious affiliation or lack thereof) so easily overtakes our quest to follow Christ and to be ... By Cheryl Paynter Though not familiar with all who are mentioned in this history of CBC, it is still a heart-wrenching read. Our fallen nature as humans is all too evident in our treatment of and lack of respect for one another. The quest to be Pentecostal, Lutheran, Baptist, or Catholic (or, insert any other religious affiliation or lack thereof) so easily overtakes our quest to follow Christ and to be Christian. Forgetting our place at the foot of the Cross and in the Body leaves us vulnerable to destruction. I am guessing that Fudge's purpose in writing this is to set the record straight, or, at least, to offer as much of a truthful perspective as possible of the demise of his Alma Mater thus giving her due respect for all she offered and gave. 0 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
