The covers for Magic Astray and A touch of Magic while beautifully drawn don't send the same message that covers like Brent Weeks, Sanderson's or up and comer Will Wights books portray which is sad because these are seriously good books that more people should read. The main character is likable, the story moves at a good pace and is well written and Gregory Mahan takes the same great story we know and love but twists it just enough to make it original and new. I had to finish both books in one reading and think they should be a lot more popular than they obviously are. I would say that Gregory is just as exciting a new author as Will Wight but doesn't seem to be getting the same love. Anyway I won't say anything more just read these books so that Gregory can keep writing more! 4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Highly Recomended! By book wizard I read fantasy and science fiction, but I am really picky in the books that I like. To give you an idea some of the authors I enjoy are Brandon Sanderson, Steven Brust, J. Kelley Anderson, Terry Mancour to name a few. That said, I like that a "A Touch of Magic" and "Magic Astray" avoid what I consider to be the common pitfalls of many works (at least so far), absolute good and evil, the one messiah like figure destined to save the world, etc. All of these things have been done before and
in my opinion done to death. The characters in Gregory Mahan's books show a decent depth and growth in the series, the magic system is interesting and well developed, and while I see many possibilities I don't know in what direction he will take the story. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. good fantasy read By Amazon Customer I like the magic system it is unconventional .
