TRUE CHRISTIANITY: THE DOCTRINE OF DISPENSATIONS IN THE THOUGHT OF JOHN WILLIAM FLETCHER (1729-1785) BY J. RUSSELL FRAZIER PDF

John William Fletcher (1729–1785) was a seminal theologian during the early Methodist movement and in the Church of England in the eighteenth century. Best known for the Checks to Antinomianism, he established a theology of history to defend the church against the encroachment of antinomianism as a polemic against hyper-Calvinism. Fletcher believed that the hyper-Calvinist system of divine fiat and finished salvation did not take seriously enough either the activity of God in salvation history or an individual believer’s personal progress in salvation. Fletcher made the doctrine of accommodation a unifying principle of his theological system and further developed the doctrine of divine accommodation into a theology of ministry. As God accommodated divine revelation to the frailties of human beings, Fletcher argued that ministers of the gospel must accommodate the gospel to their hearers in order to gain a hearing for the gospel without losing the goal of true Christianity. 'True Christianity' contains insights from Fletcher, who devoted himself, according to Wesley, to being “an altogether Christian”. ● ● ● ● ●

The Standard for Fletcher Studies By Vic Reasoner Russ Frazier appeals to the Church to listen to voices of the past. One of these voices is John Fletcher, whom he describes as "a seminal figure among the evangelical clergy of the Church of England and in the early Methodist movement of eighteenth century." The purpose of this book is twofold. The first is to examine the doctrine of dispensations as defined by Fletcher in both his published and unpublished works. Frazier finds that Fletcher had initially developed his doctrine of historical dispensations as a corrective argument "against hyperCalvinism, whose system of divine fiat and finished salvation did not take seriously enough either the activity of God in salvation history or an individual believer"s personal progress in salvation." Frazier understands Fletcher to express God's manifestation to humanity by way of three progressive stages. These are identified as "the dispensations of the Father, Son and Spirit." Occurring on a universal historical level as well as a personal level, as a believer develops in Christian faith. The second purpose of the book is to address Wesleyan-Holiness proponents who misappropriate Fletcher's theology into "their paradigm of sanctification." He plainly asserts that "the categories of that tradition are too narrow to conceptualize accurately the scope of Fletcher's soteriology and pneumatology in particular." No one has done more to impose this agenda on Fletcher than has Laurence Wood. Russ submitted his manuscript to Emeth Press for consideration. On September 25, 2011 Russ received a proposal from Wood, who founded Emeth Press in 2005, offering to print Russ's book with "editorial revision." Since Wood holds that Fletcher held a "functional equation" between entire sanctification and the baptism with the Holy Spirit, Russ would have had to "fix" those places in the manuscript where he differed with Wood. Thankfully, Russ was able to get this book printed without having to compromise the truth. Russ has provided a most comprehensive and copious study of John Fletcher's theology of dispensations. His research is proven to be far reaching. Beyond a thorough recapping of truth found in Fletcher's published works, great time and effort has obviously been invested in an international search of unpublished material. A much fuller knowledge and understanding of the theology of the Vicar of Madeley, which for too long has been buried, is now brought to light. Frazier has disarmed those within the American holiness movement who wish to force Fletcher into a support of their peculiar views that are variously dissimilar to the teachings of Wesley.
