In Primary Care: Balancing Health Needs, Services, and Technology, Barbara Starfield presents evidence of the positive impact of primary care on the health of populations and provides innovative methods to evaluate the attainment and contribution primary care systems and practitioners. This volume is a valuable extension of the author's 1992 book on primary care, underscoring two additional areas: the role of primary care in facilitating equity in health services, and the emerging overlap between clinical medicine and public health. It was very good.(From foreigner's point of view0 By Jae Ho Lee The books, primary care written by Barbara Starfield, were deliverd very soon, even though I live out of the US. The process was clear. I am satisfied with my purchase. Jae Ho Lee from S. Korea. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great advocate for Primary Care By Dr. Peter Davies Barbara Starfield is the best known primary care researcher and advocate in the world. She works in America which has one of the least primary care orientated medical systems in the world. Her work over many years has shown that healthcare systems orientated towards primary care work much better than those orientated towards specialist practice. This improvement can be measured and shown in terms of reduced morbidity and mortality. Specialists work best when there is an effective primary care filter so that only those who need specialist care get to it. Starfield has had a lot of work to do to persuade Americans (medical and lay) to accept the efficacy of primary care, which I think explains the level of detailed argumentation presented in this book. This book is now slightly dated, but still has a lot of useful information and references in it. It is carefully written, and her arguments are made well and in some detail, which means the book is not an easy read. It is a good sourcebook of evidence for and about primary care, both in USA and in the UK and the rest of the world. I can recommend it to some GPs and to health policy researchers who want a good historical understanding of where primary care comes from, and what its contribution to health care systems might be. To be honest for current GPs you can get a better flavour, and more quickly, of Professor Starfield's work from her articles and papers than you do from this book. See all 2 customer reviews...
