Excellent reprint edition of Thomas Sprat's classic By Robert Moore This book is pretty much essential reading for anyone interested in the advances in science in the 17th century. For instance, if you have read Edward Dolnick's popular history of the scientific revolution The Clockwork Universe: Isaac Newton, the Royal Society, and the Birth of the Modern World (P.S.), this is pretty much the next step in your reading. One of the founders of the Royal Society, Sprat published this account in 1667, which was several years before Newton's ascendance. This is the premiere source for gaining an eyewitness account of the state of natural philosophy immediately before Isaac Newton. But my main goal here is to judge the quality of the reprint. Presses that produce OCR editions of classic works frequently either use horrid editions from which to make their copies or use software that scans it into text that they reset using a different, modern font. The former can lead to really unpleasant copies, while the latter is pretty much impossible to use in making citations in writing or publication. This edition by Kessinger is a superior one. Most OCR editions of books this old use later printings, but this one is a reprint of the original 1667. Some unused to sixteenth century font might find some of the letters difficult to read, especially the "s", which can look to modern eyes more like an "f", but with a little experience you will cease to notice. To facilitate printing, many houses tend to use paper that requires little or no cutting. Kessinger utilizes stock 8 1/2 x 11 for this book. Since the original is much smaller and they don't increase the size of the font. The result is actually quite desirable: huge margins for extensive note taking.
In short, if you are looking for a fine copy of an essential if lesser known seventeenth-century classic, you really can't do better than this. I wanted a copy of this book for decades, ever since reading about it in R. S. Woolhouse's outstanding Locke (Philosophers in Context) (out of print, but absolutely worth going out of the trouble to find used), but the only copies I could find were available at collector's prices. Luckily you can now get a copy of this important book for less than $30 instead of hundreds, as was the case only 25 years ago. See all 1 customer reviews...
