Sassy and wise By MissE Marlena and Adrian, the leading ladies of "Stuck", the new novella by Lamar Van Dyke, have got some issues. They're virgins. They've been raised by an overbearing single mom who has homeschooled them to protect them from the cruel world. They have no friends, but are interested
in finding love. And they are conjoined twins. Like the sideshow family in Katherine Dunn's "Geek Love", or the alligator wrestling dynasty of Karen Russell's "Swamplandia", "Stuck" begins with a sensational premise, then creates its own reality, where its protagonists are anything but freaks. Van Dyke builds their characters through dialogue and description that is clever and brisk, humorous and humane. The twins get a job frosting cakes at a bakery, and finally get their own apartment. Marlena sings in a choir, where Adrian, who doesn't sing,"takes the backseat". They frequently disagree, yet are fiercely loyal to each other, while craving independence and acceptance. A guy from the choir named Tony is interested in Marlena. A gorgeous redheaded woman named Joy comes into the bakery, and Adrian is smitten. Marlena is straight, Adrian is gay. In this coming of age story, the twins struggle to set boundaries, respect privacy, and still explore their sexualities. "Easier said than done. We only have one you-know what," Marlena says. "We have to try something or we're gonna be virgins for the rest of our miserable lives," Adrian responds. Tony has his own motives with the twins (and local readers will appreciate that this weasel is from Seattle's Madison Park neighborhood). Everyone else is in uncharted territory. Joy is the normalsized daughter of circus "little people," with an extended family of retired circus performers who accept her friends immediately. Joy seeks the counsel of her lesbian aunt Gloria, a 6-foot-11 retired circus Amazon. "My advice is for you to communicate clearly and follow your heart," Gloria tells Joy. By Sigrid Macdonald Stuck is a wonderful story about two conjoined twins with conflicting needs and desires. It is wellwritten and researched and portrays the characters in a very respectful manner. Although they have mishaps and the occasional slapstick moment, and the book is comical, at heart I found it to be a drama about what it would be like to be glued to another human being 24/7, day in day out, for the rest of your life. Most of us would find that thought to be horrifying. I have enough trouble making up my own mind - what if I had to deal not only with my ambivalence but with someone else's opposing views: someone who was part of me? I could never have privacy. I would constantly have to compromise. Selfishness, even for one day, would not be an option if I always had to think about the other person that I dragged around with me all day long and vice versa. And how would I satisfy my needs for sex, companionship, or fun? Find out how Adrian and Marlena do it in Stuck. In many ways, I found the situation to be allegorical because that's what people have to do in marriage or any serious relationship. They may not be literally stuck together, but they are metaphorically joined and have to look out for each other and make sacrifices for the good of the couple.
The characters are quirky and delightful, and I agree with the poster who said that the book was slightly perverse - in a good way! Van Dyke captures the struggles of conjoined twins Adrian and Marlena entering an unknown world , a neurotic ,over -protective mother , a look into the sleazy world of porn ,and wraps it all up delightfully . Throughout the story we have glimpses of the joy derived from their love of The Sound of Music , and the author entwines this nicely with the characters , making for an interesting ending .
