INFERENCE PRINCIPLES FOR BIOSTATISTICIANS (CHAPMAN & HALL/CRC BIOSTATISTICS SERIES) BY IAN C. MARSCHNER PDF

Designed for students training to become biostatisticians as well as practicing biostatisticians, Inference Principles for Biostatisticians presents the theoretical and conceptual foundations of biostatistics. It covers the theoretical underpinnings essential to understanding subsequent core methodologies in the field.

Drawing on his extensive experience teaching graduate-level biostatistics courses and working in the pharmaceutical industry, the author explains the main principles of statistical inference with many examples and exercises. Extended examples illustrate key concepts in depth using a specific biostatistical context. In addition, the author uses simulation to reinforce the repeated sampling interpretation of numerous statistical concepts. Reducing the computational complexities, he provides simple R functions for conducting simulation studies.

This text gives graduate students with diverse backgrounds across the health, medical, social, and mathematical sciences a solid, unified foundation in the principles of statistical inference. This groundwork will lead students to develop a thorough understanding of biostatistical methodology.

Most helpful customer reviews 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. (Too) Informally presented material and sloppy editing By Lady Nigella Whilst I like the idea of the informal presentation, there are blunders in the text such as "log(0) is interpreted as "-∞" (read minus infinity)". The log of 0 is undefined so cannot be "interpreted" in any other way! I think the layout could be improved and a bit more rigour would not make the book less accessible. The main reasons for the 3 stars are that there is only one long extended exercise per chapter and there are too few) examples and those are basically the same case revisited at different stages and most importantly, no solutions at all to the end of chapter exercises. With further theoretical additions and perspectives about inference (like the development and role of the likelihood theory in inference), it could be a good book At face value, it is a very small book for the price!! 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Accessible By MW I believe that this book achieves the goal of presenting some advanced mathematical statistical topics in a very accessible way. See all 2 customer reviews...
