Ford Lance Chandler treats us to a very brief introduction to the history of science fiction. This little book can be easily read in one sitting and provides the reader with a framework that organizes the genre well. Chandler traces the development of science fiction from early, pre-science influences such as The Arabian Nights and Frankenstein. H.G. Wells and Jules Verne wrote early scientific romances that broke trail for the lurid pulp magazine tales of the 1920's. The Golden Age of science fiction followed in the 1940's and 1950's as the field developed under skilled editors like John W. Campbell. The New Age Era began in the 1960's as counterculture writers explored political and social themes instead of more traditional "hard science" stories. Various currents flow within modern science fiction, including cyberpunk, military SF, and a resurgence of the space opera. Although brief, the book does a fair job of presenting the history of science fiction along with representative samples of major authors, books and short stories. A few startling errors--such as attributing Nineteen Eighty-Four to Orson Wells--undermine the readers confidence in the details. But the author gets most of it right. The appendix titled "Start Reading Science Fiction Now With
One of These 26 Books" is worth the one-buck Kindle book price by itself. I recommend this overview and most of the books on the closing list of 26. Well-worth your time.
