By frankp93 Slonimsky's book, in my opinion, is best regarded not as some kind of Modernist-Hanon but as the title suggests, a resource for composers, arrangers, and improvisors looking to derive material to suit specific musical situations. I'd no sooner think of playing it through front to back than I'd think of reading an English thesaurus or a Rhyming Dictionary front to back. Yes, you can derive technical benefit by crafting fingerings on your instrument to execute the patterns, but that's missing the point. If you want to develop chops to play highly chromatic or pantonal 20th century music, you'll learn far more by studying the pieces themselves than from abstracted digital patterns. I have a first edition of Slonimsky's book that included an interesting pamphlet by Rudolph Shramm, identified as Chief Instructor of the Schillinger System of Musical Composition at NYU in the 40's. It describes how he incorporated the Thesaurus as supplementary material in his instruction with specific examples cross-referenced with their equivalent in Schillinger's method. While Slonimsky and Schillinger each came up with idiosyncratic nomenclature to describe musical terms, I've long felt they shared the idea that the traditional method of teaching tonal music unneccessarily restrains and shields students from many alternative ways of organizing the same raw material. For these guys, the act of writing music was about inspired selection rather than simply relying on one's musical memory for material. It's an idea not limited to music; I've read similar thoughts by architect Louis Kahn for example. Deriving musical material based on logic or mathematics rather than simply upon 18th-19th century common practice won't write the music for you - as many critics of these systems wrongly suggest. It simply provides the musician with a potentially broader palette of colors to choose from. The creative ground has been prepared and the (hopefully) inspired work can now begin.
