COLD WAR JET COMBAT: AIR-TO-AIR JET FIGHTER OPERATIONS 1950 - 1972 BY MARTIN W. BOWMAN PDF

Recounted here are nine of the earliest wars involving jet aircraft. From the Korean War and beyond, it comprises a wealth of gripping insight. Many of the jet-to-jet dogfights that spanned these jet-powered wars are enlivened to thrilling effect, including those engaged in during the two Indo-Pak Wars of 1965 and 1971. Operation ‘Musketeer’ (1956), mounted when RAF and French Air Force bombers and fighterbombers attacked airfields and other targets in Egypt (after President Nasser had nationalized the Suez Canal), is also covered in this gripping narrative. The Falklands Campaign is also covered, as is the Vietnam War. In another chapter, QRA operations around the British Isles are put under the microscope as RAF Phantoms, Lightnings, Tornadoes and Typhoon Eurofighters on Quick Reaction Alert are described, patrolling international air space and maintaining a constant vigil as Soviet ‘Bears’ continued to test NATO defenses. All in all, this is a compelling, well-researched and highly informative study of a particularly dynamic era in aviation history. ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase I got the Kindle edition(the print edition might be better value for money!) and just finished reading chapter 3 "The Indo-Pak Wars". Distinguishing any original research or analysis from direct quotations from other sources...at least in the kindle format...is problematic. On the positive side 1) It offers both sides of the story(including the MM Alam saga)...perhaps because more material from the IAF side is now available in the public domain(the 20 Sqn history and other Vayu publications are quoted liberally). There is a somewhat disjointed analysis, that goes beyond just counting downed A/C... to understanding the actual type of flying effort expended and the commensurate results(making a significant contribution to the outcome of the ground war) and of course the inevitable cost. 2)There is an obvious mix up in photo the captions of Sqn Ldrs Rafiqui and Amjad Khan...and some other 'typos'("As the Hunters jumped them Neb latched onto Hussain's Hunter and destroyed it with a one and a half second cannon burst, getting his first Sabre kill")...Not sure if this is a Kindle edition problem which might not affect the print version?? On the plus side while describing the Amjad Hussain Khan vs A.B.Devaya combat there appears to be a little more essential detail which has emerged about this air combat(the initial engagement, which was a missed sidewinder shot, started at 150 -200 feet and the fight was taken upto about 7000feet...when the Mystere began to dogfight it out and the Starfighter then used its superior climb and acceleration to try to gain the advantage) This version of the account actually says that the Mystere scored several cannon strikes and Hussain just barely managed to eject at low level.(All versions of this haunting gladiatorial combat are from the PAF side as there were no Indian witnesses to it) 3)The book has a few startling details about some of the air combats, though most is familiar ground already covered by P.V.S.Jagan Mohan,Samir Chopra and others in "Eagles over Bangladesh","My years with the IAF","Flight of the Falcon" etc...(I have reviewed some of these books) 4)There appears to be an effort to redeem the F104 Starfighter...all the F104 vs Mig 21FL combats are covered, though not in very great tactical detail. And in this connection there is mention of a potentially spectacular strike plan(in the first person) which was not approved at the lower rungs of the chain of command in the PAF. Overall, its a good introduction to anyone who wants to start exploring this particular area of Military History. For more knowledgeable aviation enthusiasts, who don't have too much information on the Air Wars over the Indian Subcontinent...this book should get them pointed in the right direction.
