In Hawaii, Tourism Is Everybody's Business By Clyde H. Hedlund Excellent book for the time it was written, but things have changed, especially with the market shift to short term residential accommodations enabled by AirBnB/VRBO and other internet facilitators. Conventional hotels are relics of the pass and couples getaways don't cut it anymore. Stand in line at Costco or Sam's and there are families, right off the plane, in front and behind you with their flatbeds loaded up with grub and drinks. Most of them stay in residential accommodations that most long term residents can't afford. Although the book briefly discusses the "proliferation" of thousands of these accommodations throughout the islands, there is no Baumol study or report
available that discusses their economic impact, despite attempts by State, County and Federal politicians to ban them, even though the President of the United States prefers them during his visits.
