Dear Prospective Communications Academy (CA), Training In Communications(TIC) Program Participant/Supporter, 1. We are requesting your support in soliciting participation for our first annual Communications Academy, Training In Communications program.

BIG promotes equality, excellence and opportunity at all levels. We are part of a non-profit, 501(3) National Organization that has over 200 chapters across the United States and overseas comprised of federal, state and local government employees. BIG provides advocacy, training, networking, scholarships, mentor programs, STEM & Oratorical competitions, as well as leadership development. We are open to all ethnicities.

Through the RFBJ chapter of BIG CA, TIC program our chapter offers youth in grades nine through twelve an 8-session program (1 to 2 hours per session). Youth are educated on various public speaking and leadership topics. Topics may range from such subjects as how to speak effectively; the concept, purpose, and approaches to communication; the process of communication; leadership skills; writing and delivering speeches; use of audiovisual aids; effective listening; and so on. Chapter members, school teachers, and other community leaders can serve as guest presenters. During the academy, students give presentations to practice their communication skills.
2. The BIG CA, TIC program, would be followed by the Oratorical contest for those interested members. a.
Through the RFBJ chapter of BIG, students will present orations and compete for awards at the chapter level. One chapter level winner will then compete at the BIG Regional level, and possibly onto BIG Nationals.
b. Participants may enter the Oratorical contests without participating in the Communications Academy. The 2017 Oratorical topic is, “Uniting the Blue Divide: What Can Young People Do to Improve the Relationship Between Law Enforcement and Their Communities.” 3. As we have mentioned, this is the first year the RFBJ chapter of BIG will host the Communication Academy Training In Communications program, , and we have a preliminary strategy to get this program up and running locally, it is as follows: Dec– solicit schools to participate Jan – solicit schools to participate Feb – solicit students to participate & identify central location for students to meet as well as most convenient time/dates Mar – solicit students to participate & identify central location for students to meet as well as most convenient time/dates Apr – host 4-5 sessions (identify those interested in the oratoriocal competiotion) May –host 4-5 sessions (identify those interested in the oratoriocal competiotion) Jun – host chapter & Region I oratorical contest* Jul – submit name of Region I winner to nationals Aug – Region I winner compete at BIG Nationals (being held in Atlantic City, NJ this year) * Gifts and/or cash prizes are provided to 1st, 2d, and 3rd place oratorical winners If you are still interested, please feel free to contact Jacquelynn Coles at (315) 396-5060, or email her at
