Job Search What is worse is more than 100 persons, a majority of them children, are still suffering from various unknown diseases in these two areas. Those who have died belonged to the age group of three and 12 years. The situation has turned worse due to lack of attention by the administration towards the well-being of the tribals. Due to little access to healthcare facilities, the tribals continue to worship various Gods to ward off the evil.
Readers' Mail In the wake of the deaths, a number of tribal families are now busy worshipping Gods and sacrificing animals such as hen, goat and buffaloes before the deities to get over the threat of death. A medical team visited the area only when local legislator and Deputy Speaker of Orissa State Assembly Prahallad Dora visited the area to take stock of the situation. The primary reason behind the tribals not approaching a doctor is the distance between their hamlets and the government-run health centres. The government hospital at Karkonda Block headquarters is 60 km away from Matapecca gram panchayat. Bonda hills area, under the Khairiput Block, has two gram panchayats of Mudulipade and Andrahall. According to the locals, the health workers or any other government official seldom visit their locality. This makes the area witness many unnatural deaths throughout the year. The voluntary organisations working in the district have also failed to bring awareness among the tribals to keep away from superstitious beliefs and avoid worshipping Gods instead of going to a doctor. Malkangiri has a vast majority of tribal people who are mostly illiterate. They also

lack awareness about personal hygiene and healthcare and also little knowledge about their rights as citizens. Poor implementation of various government programmes, including the special schemes under the Revised Long Term Action Plan (RLTAP) for the KalahandiBolangir-Koraput region, have not brought any change in the lives of these hapless population.
