Pack 190 Belzer Day Camp Information 2015 Monday June 22nd through Friday June 26th Camp Belzer – 6102 Boy Scout Road, Indianapolis, IN 46226 We have about 30 Scouts attending this year. There are separate programs for the Cubs, Webelos I’s and Webelos II. The incoming Wolves and Bears will travel as one big group with the help of a few parent chaperones. The camp staff does a great job of engaging the kids. The adults are mostly responsible for making sure the kids get to their destination on time and that the group stays together. We will need adults to stick with the Webelos I’s and II’s as well, but they have even less responsibility because their groups are led by Boy Scouts (awesome ones) that do most of the work. Most of the day some of our stuff is left unattended at a picnic table on the camp property. Please do NOT send valuables or electronic gadgets with your scouts. There’s a good chance they’ll get soaked by a pop-up shower and ruined. Please label your scout’s stuff too (like suits, towels, lunches and water bottles). Lunch is provided at Belzer Day Camp this year. Pack 190 will cover the $2.50 lunch fee for any adults joining us as a chaperone.

Schedule: Monday we will meet at CRES at 7:00 am. Bus departs at 7:30. We will pass out shirts first. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday we will meet at CRES at 7:15 am. Bus Departs 7:30. We will return to CRES between 4:45 and 5:00 Monday through Thursday. Please be on time to pick up your scouts. I will send an email when we’re leaving Belzer if I remember. Friday we will meet at CRES at 11:30. Bus departs at 12:00 noon. Bus will NOT return to CRES. See below. NOTE: We will NOT have access to the school bathrooms at CRES. We meet outside in the parking lot.

Parent Chaperones: We love to have parents join us at Belzer as much as they want to. We need to have at least 5 parents each day (at least 3 with the Cubs and 1 with each of the Webelos I and II groups). Please sign up with Carrie Smith (info below) if you’re interested. You can come one day or every day and you’ll be appreciated either way. You’ll have lots of opportunities to take pictures of your adorable scouts doing all kinds of fun stuff. You are welcome to ride the bus there and back if you’d like to. We especially need help Monday through Thursday. Adults do not cost anything, but must pay for any Tagalongs that may join them. Adults may swim if they’d like to. Sometimes when it’s 90+ it’s kind of nice to hop in the pool, so bring your suit too!

Tagalongs: Tagalongs are siblings that aren’t Cub Scouts that can accompany a parent to camp on days when the parent is volunteering. Tagalongs MUST be siblings of the scouts (no neighbors, friends or babysittees). Tagalongs ages 6 and up must pay $30 per day and can participate in all of the Day Camp activities including swimming, BB Guns, Archery and Rafting. Tagalong fees are per day and are even required on “Family Day”. You pay tagalong fees at the camp on the day your child is attending. If you have an incoming Tiger, they can attend camp and do all of the camp activities, but a parent must remain with them at all times and they must pay the full camp fee. Hopefully you’ve already registered them. If not, see me after the meeting. Tagalongs under age 6 must pay the fee of $20 per day and may not participate in BB Guns, Archery and Rafting, but may participate in all of the other activities including swimming and lunch.

Friday: We will meet in the parking lot at CRES at 11:30 on Friday. Your scout must eat lunch BEFORE we head to camp because lunch is not served on Friday. The bus can take the scouts and parents TO Belzer. The bus will NOT be returning to CRES on Friday. A parent must pick up their scout at 6:00 pm and please make sure to check your scout out with Carrie Smith before leaving so that we know you have your scout. Friday has all kinds of festivities. Besides our cookout there’s an end of the week bonfire where the staff does crazy skits and the scouts get to go up on stage and sing a silly song. Friday is considered “Family Day” and parents are welcome to come for the whole day. Siblings may come as well, but the tag-along fee of $30 per sibling is still in effect on Friday. There will be more carnival style games and stuff for the kids to do. Plus the parents get to watch the scouts shoot BB Guns and do Archery. More information will be made available during the week of camp.

Swim Bracelets: On the first day of camp the kids will get a swim bracelet that says which of the three pools they’re allowed to swim in. Please make sure your scout wears it every day so that he doesn’t have to re-do the swim test.

Trading Post: The kids will usually have time to visit the trading post every day (sometimes we don’t make it). If you want to send money with your scout, you may. One of the favorite candies for the kids is the $1.50 bottles of “sour spray”. Please NOTE… the adult chaperones do NOT monitor what the kids buy, so if you don’t want your child coming home with 14 bottles of sour spray on the first day… don’t send them with a $20 bill. The trading post has candy, ice cream (the pre-packaged kind), soda and souvenirs (t-shirts, necklaces, animal skins, etc.).

Everyday your scout should have the following: Pack T-Shirt (Make sure they’re wearing it. They’ll get it Monday morning.) Water bottle (filled with water) Sack Lunch if your scout is unable to eat the provided lunch for any reason Swimsuit and towel (goggles if your son wants them) Raingear (if rain is forecasted) Sunscreen (If your scout can’t apply it themselves, then please do it before they leave for camp. The adults CANNOT put sunscreen on other peoples’ kids.) Money for the trading post Swim bracelet (except Monday) Bug Repellent if desired (non-aerosol) Closed-toed shoes (Crocs are okay if they have the heel-strap and closed toes – no flip-flops or sandals please)

Belzer Information: On Monday during camp, you’ll receive a packet of information from Belzer. It will contain information about the week. One thing mentioned will be the “Firecrafter Dinner” which takes place Friday evening. Historically it has been expensive food with a long line. Instead of that, our pack will do a hot dog and hamburger cookout as a pack at the same time. It will be similar to the Cubmobile cookout in which each scout is assigned to bring something. More details about that will be sent during the week of camp. Just know that you DON’T need to order Firecrafter meals for your family if you want to participate with the pack instead. Also, there is a Friday night Family Campout at Belzer if you want to camp out. It includes fun stuff like swimming at night, s’mores and a night hike. It costs $7 per person including scouts and other family members. This is NOT something the pack participates in as a pack, but you are welcome to do it as a family if you’d like. You’ll send the money in with your scout one of the days (check the Monday information pack) to reserve a spot. Please note that all individuals in a tent MUST be related. You may NOT let your scout bring a friend to stay in the tent with you. If you do not have a tent, you can reserve one of the camp tents. They will also be selling DVD’s at the end of the week of camp. They’re usually less than $10. Just a note… there are a LOT of kids at camp, so there’s a decent chance that your scout may only be in a couple of the pictures on the DVD.

Activities: Throughout the week the scouts will be able to try their hands at a variety of activities. There will be BB-Gun Shooting, Archery, Beadcraft, Woodcraft, Leathercraft, Slide (kinda zip-line-ish), Swimming, Nature Hike, Cooking, Rafting (which is two canoes lashed together making them VERY stable), games, etc. The Webelos will also work on requirements for their Webelos Adventures and stuff. They do not get to participate in all of the crafts, but will get to do most of the other listed activities as well as a service project and cooking foil-pack lunches at least one day.

Lunch: Lunch will be provided to the scouts, tagalongs, and adult leaders Monday through Thursday. If a scout is unable or unwilling to eat the provided lunch they may pack a sack lunch that does NOT require refrigeration or heating. A menu for Tigers/Wolves/Bears is available at http://www.campbelzer.org/lunches.html. You can also see an ingredient listing by following a link on that page. Webelos I will be cooking a “Foil Packs” (Hamburger, Potatos, and Corn) over the fire either Wednesday or Thursday. Webelos IIs will be cooking every day: M:Hotdogs Tu:Personal Pizza W:Foil Lunch Th:Beef Stew & Apple Cobbler
