Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts is the historic home to some of Oakland’s most vital dance communities, such as Bantaba Dance Ensemble; Dance-A-Vision Entertainment; Diamano Coura West African Dance Company; Dimensions Dance Theater; and AXIS Dance Company, a company that works with disabled dancers. The Alice Arts Center’s name was changed to honor the well-known dancer, drummer, and choreographer after his death in 2003. He developed a following at an early age as a dancer for Community Fetes, a network of indigenous cultural centers near Brazzaville, in the Congo Republic, where he grew up.

At first glance, SoleSpace looks like a regular shoe store. But — while the shoe selection is top-notch — the shoe sales are actually a strategy to fund a community space. SoleSpace features exhibitions by local artists every month, frequently hosts social-justice-oriented community gatherings, and donates its space to local organizations for events on a sliding scale. In the time that it has been open, it has become a valuable space for artists and activists to come together near the city center. SoleSpace is an award-winning shoe boutique and creative lab founded in November 2012 by Favianna Rodriguez and Jeff Perlstein.

“More communities need Regina Evanses in their midst,” said Benita Hopkins, director of education and community activism for Love Never Fails. “She’s a socialchange maker and a giver. She’s always reaching out to help the next person. She’s been so pivotal for our survivors.”

Chapter 510 provides free in-school tutoring, creative writing workshops, and publishing opportunities for low income K-12 students in Oakland. We share a vision for Oakland as a place where our youth and their perspectives are visible and our teachers are honored and supported. Our youth writing center is an active participant in the KONO (Korea Northgate) neighborhood where galleries, bars, cultural venues, community organizations, churches, and merchants all live and work on the edge of gentrification and displacement. Chapter 510 operates The Dept of Make Believe, a magical bureaucracy and interactive retail space. Chapter 510 was founded by Oakland artists, parents, activists, librarians, booksellers, and students in 2013.

Regina Y. Evans, a native of Oakland, is a poet, playwright, actor, entrepreneur, and a modern-day abolitionist in the fight against sex trafficking. She is the Founder/CEO of Regina’s Door, a social enterprise vintage boutique located in Oakland. Regina’s Door is partnered with the Bay Area anti-trafficking Love Never Fails organization and hires, mentors and trains young survivors of sex trafficking. Regina’s Door was honored to receive the 2015 Oakland Indie Award for Social Changemaker.

Welcome to Oakland ! T

his self-guided walking tour, co-hosted by Chapter 510, Parcel Projects and the

Center for Art + Public Life at CCA, takes you from the Oakland Museum of California to Chapter 510, an Oakland community organization committed to creating a literacy project focused on supporting teachers and developing creative and expository writing skills for students.

Y

ou are invited to engage with 4 distinct historic and community sites in Oakland: Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts, Soul Space: Shoe Gallery and Creative Lab, Betti Ono, Regina’s Door, and Chapter 510. The tour starts at Oakland Museum of California, where you will be met by Chapter 510 high school students as your guides. We will stop briefly at each venue to learn about programming, various mediums through which issues of power are addressed, and how these organizations are situated in relation to the dynamics of displacement. Presentations along the tour will explore the importance of storytelling as a means of resistance, tactics through which to intervene in economic structures that promote or hinder cultural expression, the ways in which art-making and arts organizations may co-opt and/ or fortify urban networks towards collaboration, and the ways in which cultural processes may both translate and give voice to endangered histories as well as anticipate a more equitable future. The walk ends at Chapter 510, the intersection of art and social justice, for a public conversation, snacks and drinks.

A

nticipated length of walking tour is 1 hour 30 minutes one way, 40 minutes return.

Parcel Projects

Parcel Projects is an architecture firm focused on community-based design processes that provoke interaction and exchange. In 2015, Parcel Projects purchased 2301 Telegraph as a means to explore innovative strategies for equitable urban growth at a range of scales. 2301 Telegraph is situated in a larger conversation about political, social and economic agency and is intended to serve as an example of how and for whom to build in cities like Oakland now.

Center for Art + Public Life

The Center for Art + Public Life at the California College of the Arts believes community engagement is the cornerstone of a practice focused on changing the world. We envision a future where creative practitioners collaborate with a diversity of communities to bring about an equitable and sustainable world. In order for CCA students to fully experience this practice, the Center facilitates mutually beneficial partnerships with community organizations outside CCA with our three foundation programs: ENGAGE, a course-based community engagement program bringing our students and faculty together with local organizations for mutually-beneficial semester-long projects; CONNECTS externships, offering paid externships opportunities in all disciplines to work with vial Bay Area partners; and the IMPACT Awards, supporting innovative student-led project aimed at solving real-world social needs within a specific community. Visit us at cca.center.edu.

With thanks to all of our partners and staff!
