Ohio and the Hopalong Cassidy Dairy Program William Boyd was born in Hendrysburg, Ohio (near Cambridge) on June 5, 1898. The Hopalong Cassidy series was based on the novels of Clarence E. Mulford. In the novels, Hopalong was a salty trouble-maker who wore dusty, trail-beaten clothes and drank his share of rotgut. In 1934, Boyd was approached by producer Harry “Pop” Sherman to appear in a new series of westerns based on the character Hopalong Cassidy. Sherman offered Boyd the role of the villain, but the actor wanted to play the lead. When Sherman’s first choice to play Hoppy didn’t work out, he gave the role to Boyd, though the actor wanted to change the concept for the character. Boyd's vision of the character called for a clean-cut, welldressed cowboy who did not drink, court women, or chew tobacco. With Hopalong, Boyd felt he was contributing something. He became totally focused on doing something good with his life. From 1935 to 1944, Boyd starred in 118 Hopalong Cassidy films. In 1946, Boyd purchased the rights to the films and had them re-edited for television. From October of 1950 to January of 1954 the Hopalong Cassidy Show aired on NBC. The TV shows then went into syndication for many years. In 1949 Hopalong Cassidy Enterprises was organized to market Hoppy bicycles, roller skates, pajamas, wall paper, peanut butter and other items to the tune of $70 million per year. The first dairy license was issued on August 21, 1950 to the Luick Ice Cream Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin to manufacture Hopalong Cassidy ice cream. The first milk license was issued to Marin Dairymen's Milk Company, of San Francisco, California, on April 16, 1951. Numerous other West Coast dairies quickly joined the bandwagon.

In 1954 John D. Utterback founded the member owned All Star Dairy Association. The Association specializes in volume pricing negotiated on behalf of its members. Other services include marketing, training, quality assurance, carton design, industry updates, legal bulletins, annual convention, networking, consulting, job placement and more. By the mid 1950s Hoppalong Cassidy was one of the most popular western movie stars in the United States. In 1954 AllStar Dairy franchises in New York, Kentucky, Kansas, Illinois, Ohio, California, North Carolina, Michigan and Pennsylvania, began using Hoppalong Cassidy in their advertising. All Star Dairies took Hopalong Cassidy endorsed milk products nationwide. This program worked well for the dairies. Hoppy toured the country promoting All-Star dairy products. There were 78 dairies across the United States that had franchises for Hopplong Cassidy's favorite milk and another 20 had the franchises for Hoppy's favorite ice cream. In 1959, Boyd sold Hopalong Cassidy Enterprises for a capital gain of $8 million and retired from film and television. By 1962 most of the Hoppy dairy franchises were gone. Boyd toured the country promoting various Hoppy products until his death in 1972. Today Producer's Dairy, of Fresno, California, is the only dairy left that uses Hoppy in their advertising.

In the early 1950s Ullery’s Dairy, of Greenville, went together with the Royal Crest Dairy, of Dayton, and Sander’s Dairy, of Piqua, and they began to sponsor Hopalong Cassidy movies at various theaters. The movies were shone on Saturday mornings in the local movie theaters. William Boyd came to the Dayton theater to open this dairy promotional program and the sponsors got to meet with him and his wife. The Ullery’s took their employees and their families to Dayton for this special event. As the films were shone each Saturday morning the three dairies were allowed to advertise their products to the viewing public. There were also items such as Hopalong Cassidy hats, guns and holsters, drinking cups, watches and games that the young children could purchase. By this time most dairies had gone from glass bottles to paper cartons. On the cartons would be a picture of Hoppy expressing that Ullery’s milk was his favorite drink.
