Anderson Creek Primary Parent Newsletter 2016-2017 Mrs. Leanne O’Quinn Principal Principal

Mrs. Leanne Dutton Assistant Principal Assistant Principal

A Message from Mrs. O’Quinn: Dear Anderson Creek Families, I would like to start by saying how much we appreciate your part in making this a successful beginning of the school year! We appreciate each of you and the support you offer to your children and our program of high quality daily instruction. The teamwork effort being made with administrators, teachers, assistants, students, parents, and community members has been instrumental in helping to provide our little learners with the very best instructional high time-on-task day. We are very blessed to have such a superior faculty and staff that truly work diligently to meet the needs of all diverse learners. We want to remember the families that have been affected by hurricane Matthew. Many of our families continue to face challenges as a result of the storm and recovery process. We want to thank all the members of the community that have helped during this difficult time.

Red Ribbon Week

School Counselor’s Corner

October 24-28, 2016 Red Ribbon Week is set aside nationally in the month of October to make children aware of the dangers of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco use. We encourage our Anderson Creek Cubs to make good, healthy, and responsible choices. . Our “Drug Free” emphasis will include fun theme days for student and staff participation. Our theme for this year is “Learning.Loving.Leading: Who needs drugs?” Our daily themes are: Monday: Learning with my “Thinking Cap” on (wear a hat) Tuesday: “SOCK it to Drugs and Bullies” (wear crazy socks) Wednesday: Love Yourself (wear red and hearts) Thursday: Team up against Drugs and Bullies(wear your team jersey or shirt) Friday: Leading our future: Dress as a leader (wear career outfit)

We are beginning our small groups. Small groups provide not only the opportunity for additional learning experiences but also a time of growing together with fellow students. These groups will talk about making adjustments, how to deal with unpleasant situations, how to make friends, how to be a friend and how to find happiness within yourself. In classroom guidance, we are talking about the 7 Habits and the character traits associated with each habit. We have been talking about citizenship, trustworthy and responsible and also Habit 1 – Be Proactive. Ask your child to tell you about these character words and Habit 1. If you have questions or would like for your child to participate in one of our small groups, please contact the school counseling department.

7 Habits Highlight: Habit 1: Be Proactive Canned Food Drive October 24-28, 2016 Our school will be participating in the Harnett County Food Drive again this year. Donations will go toward the Harnett County Food Pantry. Each month, the Food Pantry distributes enough food for over 8,000 meals. Suggested Donations: Canned meats, canned fruit, peanut butter, canned soups, canned vegetables, canned spaghetti sauce, Macaroni and Cheese, Jiffy Mix Cornbread, 1 lb. packages of pasta, rice, and dry beans, cereal, grits, oatmeal, crackers, Ramen Noodles, or canned pasta. Thank you!

“COINS FOR A CURE” Please participate in our October Coin Drive for Relay for Life! Our coin drive will run from October 10–31. Send in your coins! We want each classroom to fill their plastic 16 oz. bottles with lots and lots of coins to raise money for the fight against cancer. The classroom on each grade level with the most coins will receive a popsicle party! Thank you for your support!

You’re in Charge: I am a responsible person. I take initiative. I choose my actions, attitudes, and moods. I do not blame others for my wrong actions. I do the right thing without being asked, even when no one is looking. Character Trait Focus: *Responsibility *Trustworthiness

7 Habits at Home: “It’s vital to teach kids to take responsibility for their own lives, for their own fun or boredom, for their own happiness or unhappiness. This is Habit 1-Be Proactive.” -7 Habits of Happy Kids With your child, think of ideas on how they can “Be Proactive” at home. Picking out their clothes at night, getting dressed in the morning, making their beds, picking up their toys, or packing their school bag are examples of being proactive.

Parent/Teacher Conferences Parents and guardians, please be aware that parent/teacher conferences are required prior to the end of the first nine weeks. Our teachers will be busy scheduling conferences this month to ensure every parent has the opportunity to discuss their child’s progress. We are looking forward to a very supportive response from our parents, which is important for us to continue to work to help each student in our school to be able to achieve grade level proficiency in all content areas. By working together as a TEAM, our Anderson Creek Cubs can be successful!
