HA‘AHEO KAKOU www.haaheo.org

Principal’s Message Aloha Ha‘aheo Community, Family & Friends, Can you believe the first quarter is coming to an end! We have had an amazing start of our school year. We will be announcing our first core value award winners for each class on Wednesday, October 4th. They will be receiving a certificate and picture for their efforts in showing Hō‘ihi (respect) and recognized in our November newsletter. The 2nd quarter core value we will be working on schoolwide is Kūpono (integrity). I am very proud of every student and their teachers for participating in our core value presentations from K-6 for Wednesday mound. I have been impressed and filled with Ha‘aheo pride with each and every grade level presentation! We are currently looking for a basketball coach for the HPD HI-PAL elementary division for grades 4-6 starting in February 2018. In order to enter our school in the league, we need a coach. Anyone interested in coaching may contact Mari Apigo at [email protected]. Some reminders are that there are students that are bringing homemade slime to school and it has been causing issues and distraction in the classrooms. On Monday mound (10/2/2017), it has been announced that slime is now contraband item and it will be confiscated if it is seen at school. I would like to wish you and your ‘ohana a safe and restful Fall Break so we will be ready to start our second quarter upon return!

The Winning Papaya

LOGO HERE

At almost 5 pounds, a papaya from our school garden, took first place in the Junior Division Giant Fruit Category at the Hilo Jaycee's County Fair. Students planted the papaya trees last year with help from Aunty Donna, our garden teacher. We are very grateful for Aunty Donna and her dedication to our school garden. She continues to work with students to help our garden thrive. Mahalo, Aunty Donna!

Due to unforeseen changes to the program, beginner Hula and Tahitian classes will be postponed until the return from Winter Break (January 2018). Space is limited. *Please note that this halau has no affiliation with Kumu hula Johnny Lum-Ho or his halau. Statewide Assessment Family Report Grade 4-6 students brought home the Family Report for the Smarter Balanced ELA/Literaacy and Mathematics Assessment Results in their Tuesday Folders on Tuesday, September 26. The HAS Science Assessment Results (for Gr. 5 only) will be sent home on Tuesday, October 3. During the school year 2016-17, grades 3-6 were administered the Smarter Balanced ELA/Literacy and Mathematics Assessments which included both an adaptive test and a performance task. These Family Reports show the students' scale score and proficiency level on each content area assessment, which counts as the official score for that content area. Last year's Grade 4 also took the Science Assessment which they had three testing opportunities. The Family Report for Science show the students' highest score on the Science Assessment, which counts as the official score for science. An Interpretive Guide has been developed to help families understand how to read and find information contained in the family reports. If you should have any questions about the Family Reports, please feel free to contact your child's teacher or see Mrs. Sueoka, principal.

October: Bullying Prevention Month

October is Bullying Prevention Month around the World.

This month, across the world, from New York to New Zealand, thousands of schools, communities, organizations and individuals will come together to release new resources, campaigns, and efforts aimed at raising awareness for bullying prevention. Nearly a decade old, Bullying Prevention Awareness month was initiated by PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center in October 2006. Since it began, the event has grown to an entire month of education and awareness activities, and is being recognized by schools and communities throughout the world. PACER recognized that students, parents, and people around the world need to become more aware of the serious consequences of bullying. For more information, visit www.stopbullying.gov.

Ha‘aheo Elementary was so fortunate in the Month of September to have Officer Matsumura visit our school and talk to all of our students about the "golden rule" and how to identify and stop bullying. During the month of October, the school counselor will also be delivering guidance lessons on Bullying prevention in grades K-6. Bullying is on purpose, repeated, someone's feelings or body is being hurt and usually there is a power imbalance. Bullying is not two friends getting into an argument. All students deserve to feel safe from bullying at school. If your child comes home and shares that they are being bullied at school please let the school counselor or school principal know. If the school contacts you to share that your child is bullying others, we do all that we can to help all students who are involved in bullying either feel safe at school, understand how to treat others with kindness and respect, or how to cope with any feelings that may be leading a student to bully others. Bullying is a Chapter 19 offense and there are consequences which can include suspension for bullying behavior. For more resources, please visit www.haaheo.org > Academics > Counseling. If you have any questions, or think your child is being bullied or bullying others please feel free to contact Mrs. Young, School Counselor at (808) 974-4111 or stop by her office (Room A6 - right next to the office).

Ha‘aheo Student Council

It's election season for our student council officers and class representatives! Please go to www.haaheo.org > Academics > Counseling > Student Council to see the full schedule. They were given nomination forms to take around school for student and staff signatures which were due on Friday, September 29th. We will meet again to go over the campaigning rules on Monday, October 2nd. Official campaigning will run from Monday, October 16th thru Thursday, October 19th. Presidential (Grade 6) candidates will give speeches on the morning mound on Monday, October 23rd. Grades 2-6 will cast their votes for the offices of student council President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Sergeant at Arms on Monday, October 23rd after the speeches are done. Officers will be announced on Wednesday mound on October 25th. Student Council Representative voting will then commence between October 25-27 in grades 3-6. Kindergarten: Mahalo, Hilo Rotary Club! Aunty Beverly from the Hilo Rotary Club came for the month of September to read aloud to the kindergartners. She read a book to the students and each student was given a book. This was her first visit to our Ha'aheo Kindergarten class. Aunty Beverly will be visiting every month to read aloud and donate books. Thank you Aunty Beverly from the Hilo Rotary Club for reading to us and donating all the wonderful books! We look forward to seeing you in October.

Parking Lot Etiquette & Procedures We would like to remind all parents, guardians and/or anyone that is designated to pick up your child(ren) about our parking lot etiquette and procedure. Please abide by all posted signs in the parking area. Our parking lot consists of two main lanes: the INSIDE lane is for constant-flowing traffic ONLY; the OUTSIDE lane is designated for cars that are waiting for their child to be picked up at the pick-up/drop-off ramp. If waiting in the outside lane, DO NOT leave your cars unattended as it is a slow but consistent flow towards the ramp. Also, please be mindful that you may be blocking cars that are parking in stalls that may be wanting to leave. As you are waiting and see that your child(ren) is/are ready for pick-up, you may cautiously move to the left, and merge with the INSIDE lane. All afterschool, incoming traffic has been blocking our school bus, delivery trucks, school courier, etc. from entering onto school property. This also may potentially hinder any vehicles of access in the event of an emergency. Additional parking has been designated to alleviate the OUTSIDE lane which is located in the grassy area at the top of the parking lot. Please DO NOT block the opening driveway into the grassy area. Be aware that when parking here, you are parking orderly and not blocking cars from entering or exiting this area. You may also choose to use this parking area to wait in your vehicle until your child is ready for pick-up. Once ready, proceed to exit the grassy area with caution, merging into the INSIDE lane. When approaching the trash bins, please be sure to merge into ONE line as you proceed to the pick-up ramp. DO NOT drive side by side another vehicle. Your child will be walked to your vehicle by an adult. Older students will be advised when it is safe to walk to their vehicle. If your child(ren) is/are being picked up, please help us by reminding them that after being released from class by the bell AND teacher’s dismissal, to quickly head up to the pick-up ramp. Should you reach the ramp and your child is not present, you will be asked to circle back around. Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we strive to better our school’s parking lot etiquette and procedures.
