Regional Commissioner’s Report On the 9th September I, along with RC Member Support, Grahame Pricter travelled to Scone for the occasion of their Centenary and indeed what a magnificent and well organised event it was. Group Leader Donna Hopkins has every right to be very proud of her Scout Group however, may I mention that Scout Leader, Greg ”Fuzz” Morris, produced a sensational book to help mark this very important milestone in the Groups history. The book is very meticulously done, year by year for the entire 100 years. The detail in the book reflects the pride Greg has in the involvement in Scone Group for the last 20 years as Scout Leader. Past leaders were present, memorabilia on display, GL Tilligerry Ralph Francis who was a long time youth member and leader in Scone Group unveiled a plaque to mark the occasion and the local Service Clubs were in attendance. But in particular, it was how proud people were to be part of the Group. Let me just say, group pride is paramount to the success of any Scout Group: understanding the stories behind the scarfs colours and people having that warm and fuzzy feeling (no reference to Greg!) about their role in their Group. Congratulations to Scone on a brilliant job of their Scouting Centenary celebration. On 16th September our Annual Adult Recognition presentation in the presence of our Chief Commissioner Neville Tomkins OAM JP was held at Kotara High School. On the topic of Group and Scouting pride, this could be heard in the words of the citations where we recognised the work of our awardees. Superlatives of commitment, dedication, example to all, positive thinking, inspiration, were heard just to name a few. My friends, Scouting thrives and drives on this “can do” positive attitude. I hope you feel that way about your Scouting experience and I hope you are getting personal enjoyment and satisfaction. If you are, then the youth of the day are the ones to benefit. So I hope your Group has the warm and fuzzy feeling about it and you are proud of your Group and want to tell the world. I let you be the judge.

Joey Scouts Report How fast is the Year is rushing by !! There is so much has gone on in the past month and so much more is coming before the end of the year. I’ve got 10 things to cover off this month so get ready for an information overload. Gathering of All Sections Joeys will be trailing a new approach to the Joey activities at GAS this year. We are still going to have the traditional base style activities and a giant jumping castle but we will also have a Scavenger Hunt Activity around Glenrock itself so make sure you bring your trekking boots as your about to get out and about. From my discussions with the other sections there is going to be so many activities this year that you will struggle to get everything completed so it’s shaping up to be an action packed weekend. I’m also hoping to see heaps of Joeys camping at Glenrock, from the attendance within my own Mob we are seeing 4 families camping and 3 other families coming in as day visitors. District Nights Did your Mob attend a District night last term? If not, why not? Do you know who to get in contact with for your District nights? Feel free to get in touch to find out who’s organising them and where they are for your local night. Newcastle District had a great night exploring the city of Newcastle and finding ways to get around while all the road works were happening. One Mob even caught the ferry into town. The Joeys were navigating around from place to place answering various questions such as “when was that building built and what’s here”. Group life Does your Joey have a Group life? Group life is the idea that the Joey and the Joeys family are actively involved with all aspects of their local Scout Group. We all know that life is getting busier, having an active Group life does not mean that your Mob is away every weekend. Has your Joey Mob met with your Cub Pack recently? Do you have nights where your whole Group is involved and the parents get involved with their children as well? Try and consider these things as your programing for term 4. Promise Challenges The quality of some promise challenges across the State has not been the greatest. Some applications have been knocked back due to the quantity / quality of the work being done for the Duty to self / Others not being of acceptable standards. Please make sure that your Joey has had a discussion with you regarding what they will be doing and that it’s of an acceptable standard. If you have any questions as to what is acceptable then feel free to give me a ring or shoot me a message. The aim is to have the child “challenge themselves” a sustained effort over 2-3 weeks for the service is a good guide ie 1 hour a week for 3 weeks. Every Joey is different, but as a rough guide that’s a generally acceptable time frame. When submitting the F9 (promise Challenge form) please make sure you email through some photos as well, the State Commissioner Joey Scouts loves having a look and seeing what the Joeys have been up to. Fundraising Sadly after some research and discussions it’s been highlighted at a state level that Joeys are unable to Fundraise. This is due to State legislation requiring someone participating in fundraising to be over 8 years old. This means Joeys cannot collect money for their promise challenge instead they have to collect goods, i.e. cans for a food drive. Quick Reference Guides for Joeys The State Joey council is working on some quick, short factsheets about various aspects of Joey Scouts. We have factsheets on about half a dozen topics from Ceremonies’ to Promise Challenges and camps to linking. As soon as these become available I will share the web link with everyone.

Core Sectional Skills Training Day Thanks to those who attended the Core sectional Skills Day back in late august. We valued your feedback on the day and will be running at least another one next year. If you have any topics that you would like covered on these days then please let me know and I can work them into the day. We had about 10 joey leaders attend and from all accounts they came away with lots of new information and polished skills. Promise and Law Resources The new promise and Law recourses are out. They can be downloaded from http://ypr.scouts.com.au/pl/ from here you can download programming guides / templates that can be used to run a night or two on the new promise and law. Posters can also be purchased from the scout shop. Please go and have a look and start implementing these in your mobs and groups. In regards to the length of the new law, there is a consensus that we only need to say the leading line of each stanza, however if you can get your joeys to learn the whole law that’s even better Mob Councils By now we should all have Mob councils operating within our Mobs. A mob council conceptually is very similar to a pack or troop council where the leaders facilitate a conversation with the youth. This is useful for gaining the Joeys ideas on various things such as developing a term program or creating a code of conduct for a Mob. There will soon be a quick reference guide document further explaining this concept, I’ll send out the link in Joey Leader news when it becomes available. The New Youth Program The new youth program is very close, just over a year away and a revamped award scheme and symbolic framework will be launched for all of Scouting. For those Mobs interesting in trialling the new system early next year, have a look at the pioneer groups page - http://ypr.scouts.com.au/pioneers/ From here you can have a look at the information pack and have a chat to other sections within your group. Please take the time to explore the YPR website as it’s full of great links to programs such as breaking the cycle, the new promise and law content and an online workshop which will explain the whole YPR concept in just over a 15 minute video. Well that’s a wrap of everything that is happening at the moment. If you have any questions please shoot me an email or give me a call. I’d also ask that you keep sharing with me the great activities that your mobs are doing with some photos or even programs that I can then share with everyone.

Cub Scouts Report The new Youth Program is coming, only 16 months to go. It’s exciting, challenging and a new outlook for Scouting. It is now, more than ever, that your attendance at District Seeonee is a must, as this is where you will be given the most up to date information. Some aspects of Activities have already started in the new program. I have put a request out there for at least 1 or more Leaders from each Cub Pack to do a Level 1 Scout training in Bushwalking. This is a relatively easy qualification to achieve, as most of the requirements can be signed off immediately. I am hoping to arrange a day next year, where we can get together and complete most facets. The reason behind this, is for your safety and I want to make sure that every one of you are covered in case you are on a walk and something goes wrong. This will roll into the new program. This month, your 10 ½ year old Cubs will be receiving a letter in relation to going to Jamboree 2019. This is an initiative run by State. In the letter it is requesting the Cubs to talk to their Parents/Carers, Cub Leader, Scout Leader and Group Leader to see if they can start Scouts in January 2018. Even though these Cubs will still be able to attend the following Jamboree, be mindful when there are several Cubs in the same family, one Cub could attend the 2019 and another attend 2022, as this would take the financial burden off the family. One week prior to the letters going out, you and your Scout Leader should receive an email from State with a list of names who will be receiving them. I had the privilege of attending Cooks Hill Scout Group, our Disability Group. We did Candle Making and whilst they were apprehensive at the start, they had an absolute ball. The Region team has decided to start including and inviting them to attend our Fun Day and Region Cuboree. They will have their Carers with them and will be free to wander onto which ever activity they would like to try. If you should see them, please stop and talk, as we have so much to learn from them. We have started preparations for next year’s Fun Day and Region Cuboree. They will be held on; Region Fun Day – Maitland Showground on Sunday 25th March 2018 Region Cuboree – Morisset Showground on 14/15/16th September 2018 I will advise when I get dates for our Training Days and a Bushwalking course. Please keep both these dates free as there is so much fun to be had for all. Keep Smiling

Scouts Report Scouts - It’s time to get out & hike Now that spring is here - its hiking season, and your Scouts should be getting out and about as this is the best time to hike. You should be using the latest technology of SPOT units and personal locater beacons to keep track of your scouts whilst on a hike. DSL’s will supply you with an EPIRB for Adventurer Cord hikes in case of emergencies, so make sure you are prepared. Please ensure that proper risk assessments are done for each hike and if the hike is out of your district, the appropriate DC must be notified two weeks prior to the hike via the E1 form. If the hike is in another Region, the appropriate Region Office should be notified. Corroboree 2018 The Corroboree is a five day standing camp run by Hunter & Coastal Region for Scouts. It is being held at Tocal College on the Paterson River near Paterson from Wednesday 17th January to Sunday 21st January. The camp is based on the patrol system with Troops camping Jamboree style across several sub-camps, with scouts and leaders being fully catered for. The camp uses town water for drinking and food preparation. Hunter & Coastal Troops are to be formed on a district basis, using Jamboree style dining areas, using patrol tents for scouts. Patrols from other Regions can contact the organizer, or contact H&C DSL’s via the Region Office to buddy-up with a troop to experience the Corroboree Camp. Activities will commence on 18th Jan, and will include traditional scouting and commercial activities, as well as a Bivouac overnight hike, where scouts will need to bring a separate day pack, small tarp & poles to sleep in their Hutchie.
Venturers are invited to attend Corroboree as helpers on the Venturer base activity. They will camp (in hike tents) & eat at the Venturer sub-camp. For our leaders and youth, the Corroboree is a stepping stone to the next Australian Jamboree, in fact if leaders and youth don’t attend this camp, it would be difficult for our Region Liaison Leader to sign off applications to attend AJ2019, so we are expecting a big attendance, as it far exceeds any other regional event leading up to Jamboree.

Basic Outdoor Skills Over the weekend 16th and 17th September fourteen Scout Leaders from Sydney, Central Coast and Newcastle attended a Basic Outdoor Skills training course at 1st Tilligerry Scout Hall. This course involved the theory and practical aspects of preparing hikes and lightweight camping that is part of the training of our youth members. This included use of a compass, being able to read and understand a topographic map, grid references, and orientation of the map and setting the course for a hike. On Saturday the participants were required to hike from the Scout hall to and through Tilligerry Habitat, followed on Sunday by an 8km route which they had planned and mapped earlier. This hike took them via Panorama Lookout, the waterfront and the weather radar station, then back to the Scout Hall. The Tilligerry peninsular is an ideal location for these types of courses and the Scout hall and facilities are particularly well set up to cater for large numbers of participants. The Habitat in particular was well received by all and drew many positive comments particularly after being told of and then seeing, a koala near the boardwalk.
