IVHS Students Hold 2nd Annual Dan Fiske Memorial Day of Service The 2nd Annual Dan Fiske Memorial Day of Service took place September 25th in Cave Junction. Pioneered by 12th grader Skyla Patton, the service day involves students from Illinois Valley High School teaming up for a half day of community service in Cave Junction. The Illinois Valley High School Leadership class, Josephine County Foundation (JCF), and Hidden Valley Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) partnered to plan this year’s Dan Fiske Memorial Day of Service. Dan Fiske was a former local veterinarian, city councilman, and service oriented person from the Illinois Valley. In memory of Dan, the students of IVHS donated their time to a number of projects. Chris Pendleton, Hidden Valley HS teacher, and Skyla Patton organized the high school work groups.

1.

The service projects this year included: 1. Rusk Ranch Nature Center—Students completed trail work, rebuilt a fence, and tidied up the pavilion area before getting a brief tour and education on butterflies and the center’s day-to-day activities. 2. Siskiyou Field Institute—Students pulled weeds near the main building and paved paths of the institute. 3. Evergreen Elementary—Students re-painted and finished handrails leading up to two outdoor portables that they had partially worked on last year. 4. Cave Junction Library—Students mulched and helped maintain the garden area in front of the local library by wedding, planting herbs, and moving soils.

4.

5. Illinois Valley Airport/Smokejumper Base—Students performed manual labor to help maintain the airport surroundings; work included moving rocks and weeding the surrounding areas. (No photo.) 6. Illinois Valley High School On-Campus Clean Up—Students helped clear trash from the school campus. 7. Lorna Byrne Middle School—Lorna Byrne MS students participated in this Day of Service from their campus by writing thank-you cards to veterans and engaging in various craft projects.
