The 411 Initiative For Change Teaches Girls About Social Issues Such As Self-Esteem & Bullying Musician Masia One & actress Anita Majumdar visit Holy Trinity on April 1, 2011 Ottawa, ON - Youth organization The 411 Initiative For Change (411) will present its 411 TV: Girls presentation at Holy Trinity Catholic High School @ 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. on the afternoon of Friday, April 1, 2011 to all grade 7-10 girls. The 411 TV: Girls presentation, a girls’ empowerment program, is a highly entertaining and candid program that will reach 7,000 female students in various Ontario cities and we are proud to host the group at Trinity. Since its inception in 1999, 411 has presented in over 400 schools across Canada, talking to teens about girls rights, human rights and HIV/AIDS. This new program comes as a result of requests from students and teachers for 411 to focus on domestic issues affecting girls, such as body image, self-esteem, racism, careers, healthy relationships and bullying (cyber bullying). The program takes the format of a mock live-to-air TV talk show, mixing video, theatre and music with live interviews to relay positive images of girls and to offer real-life testimonies from Canadian girls and women. Musician and entrepreneur Masia One has prepared new music for the program and will share personal experiences to generate a discussion with students. “I use my life experiences to engage girls in an open discussion. For example my experiences being bullied and as a result becoming a bully during my teenage years,” explains Masia One. “I also give girls a behind the scenes look at the music industry and provide some balance to the glitz and glam they see in the media.” Award winning actress and playwright Anita Majumdar performs a dance infused piece focusing on integration and self-esteem. Her performance is an abridged version of her one-woman play “Fish Eyes”, which explores the life of a Indian Canadian teen balancing her home and school life. The show is hosted by freelance reporter, public speaker and fashion blogger Ivy Prosper. Additionally the program includes a video feature with Canada’s first female commercial airline pilot Judy Cameron as part of a focus on women and careers. 411’s programming works to give girls the chance to speak out about issues they are facing, engaging them in critical thought. This program demonstrates that Canadian girls and woman are drivers of change and are making a difference in their communities.
