Oberlin College Scholarships for Oberlin High School Graduates As part of its commitment to the community, Oberlin College is contributing its greatest resource - a first-class education - as an encouragement to all Oberlin students to pursue excellence and seek a college degree. Beginning in the 2001-02 academic year, Oberlin College will offer full tuition scholarships to qualified graduates of Oberlin High School. The scholarships are a component of the College/Schools Partnership, a collaborative effort between the College and the Oberlin public schools to enhance the quality of public education for all students in Oberlin. The entire program is part of the Oberlin Partnership.

Oberlin High School Scholarship Program Details Who is eligible for the tuition scholarship? Any student who meets the following criteria is eligible to apply for four years of tuition scholarships (or five years if admitted to Oberlin's double-degree program). The Oberlin High School Scholarship is available to any graduating senior who • • • •

has been enrolled in Oberlin High School continuously for four or more consecutive years has lived in the Oberlin City School district for at least the four years preceding high-school graduation completes an on-campus interview with the Office of Admissions staff, and meets Oberlin College's admissions standards and is accepted for admission.

What kind of preparation does Oberlin College generally require for admission? The best-prepared candidates usually have taken four years of English (with an emphasis on writing), three years of a foreign language, four years of mathematics, three years of natural science, and three years of social studies (including history). Students ore encouraged to take enriched or Advanced Placement courses when available and to include trigonometry and pre-calculus, as well as biology, chemistry, and physics, in their high-school curriculum. Foreign language study beyond three years is also very desirable. Admission to the Conservatory of Music is based on the normal evaluation process, which includes an audition. What is the eligible residency area? The tuition benefit is limited to residents of the Oberlin City School district, which includes the City of Oberlin and parts of New Russia, Pittsfield, Carlisle, and Amherst townships. Applicants must have lived within this area for at least four years preceding high-school graduation and must continue that residency during their enrollment at Oberlin College. Can I be a part-time student or take graduate-level courses? Scholarship recipients must be enrolled as full-time, undergraduate students at Oberlin College. To be considered full-time, a student must be registered for at least 12 credit hours of classes. Except for the Conservatory's five-year master's-degree programs, Oberlin does not offer graduate-level courses. Can I transfer from another college or university? Yes, but you must meet Oberlin's admissions requirements and be a graduate of Oberlin High School who has met the four-year enrollment and residency requirements.

To earn a bachelor's degree at Oberlin, a student must complete at least 56 credit hours of college work (62 credit hours for Conservatory students) and have at least four semesters in residence at Oberlin College. What if I didn't take college-preparatory courses in high school, or I did poorly in high school, or I've been out of high school for a while and want to enter Oberlin College as a non-traditional student? Oberlin is always willing to talk to prospective students about their situations and encourages the enrollment of nontraditional students. Candidates who do not meet Oberlin's normal admissions requirements may be asked to show that they can successfully navigate the rigors of college-level work by attending another college for one or two years before applying to Oberlin College. Is there a minimum grade-point average I must maintain to keep my scholarship? To have your scholarship continued, you must remain a student in good academic standing at Oberlin College. All students are required to earn sufficient credits - normally at least 12 credit hours per semester - or risk being placed on academic probation. Does the scholarship automatically renew for all four years, or five years if I am in the double-degree program? Yes, as long as you remain a student in good academic standing and remain a resident of the Oberlin City School district. Must I complete other aid applications? Students must complete applications for federal and state scholarship grant programs. After any grants are awarded, Oberlin will make up the difference to 100 percent of tuition. What costs are not included in the scholarship? The scholarship covers tuition only. Room and board, student fees, health insurance, and books are the student's responsibility. However, students with demonstrated higher financial need may qualify for financial assistance over and above tuition. Where can I learn more about the Oberlin High School Scholarship? Contact the Oberlin College Office of Admissions at 440-775-8411 or the Oberlin Partnership office at 440-7755500. Oberlin High School guidance counselors also have information about scholarship opportunities at Oberlin College.

The Oberlin Partnership Established in 2000, the Oberlin Partnership is a collaborative effort headed by leaders from Oberlin College and the City of Oberlin. Its purpose is to find cooperative and innovative solutions to pressing local issues of education, housing, economic development, and recreation.
