NSW Government gets behind BlazeAid The NSW Government will provide $162,000 to assist BlazeAid and other volunteer groups helping victims of the recent bushfires in the Bookham, Cooma and Coonabarabran regions, Minister for Primary Industries Katrina Hodgkinson announced today. “Farmers devastated by the destruction to their properties have been overwhelmed with support from BlazeAid and other volunteers,” Ms Hodgkinson said. “The State Government money will support local councils with the cost of temporary camp facilities for the BlazeAid volunteers who are doing a fantastic job working with farmers and affected families to rebuild damaged fencing. “The sooner farmers can repair or replace their fences, the sooner they can start to work their properties again and get back on their feet.” BlazeAid is a volunteer-based organisation that works with rural property owners and farmers in disaster-affected areas helping to rebuild fencing and communities. “Local Councils have established temporary campsites so the BlazeAid volunteers can be central to the fireground and this has involved costs associated with site preparation, power, plumbing, shower and toilets and water supply,” Ms Hodgkinson said. “These new funds will assist Councils to cover the costs associated with this work.” The Department of Primary Industries will work with the affected regions on the appropriate distribution of funds. Ms Hodgkinson said there was additional support available for victims of the bushfires in the Warrumbungle, Coonamble, Gilgandra, Harden, Yass Valley and Cooma-Monaro regions. “Clean-up and recovery grants of up to $15,000 are now available for eligible primary producers in areas severely affected by bushfires in NSW,” Ms Hodgkinson said. “This assistance is available under Category C of the jointly funded Federal/State Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA). “Primary producers in the fire affected parishes should contact the NSW Rural Assistance Authority on 1800 678 593 to see if they are eligible for the grant.” Information on the range of assistance available under the NDRRA can be found at www.disasterassist.gov.au.
