Barry O’Farrell MP Premier of NSW Minister for Western Sydney
MEDIA RELEASE Wednesday 22 May 2013
NSW BIOSECURITY STRATEGY RELEASED NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell and Primary Industries Minister Katrina Hodgkinson today called on NSW residents to work alongside farmers and government agencies to ensure the State maintains its excellent biosecurity status. The NSW Government today launched the NSW Biosecurity Strategy 2013-2021 at the Nursery & Garden Industry’s Green Expo in Sydney. “The NSW Government has more than 400 biosecurity staff who work hard to protect our $12 billion primary industries sector and environment against animal and plant pests, diseases and weeds,” Mr O’Farrell said. “We have an enviable reputation for our high-quality, safe and disease-free food and fibre products - however it takes community, industry and Government working together to maintain this status. “Whether you are a farmer in the Central West or a keen gardener in suburban Sydney, everyone has a role to play in managing biosecurity threats by being vigilant and keeping a watchful eye out for unfamiliar pests, diseases and weeds.” Ms Hodgkinson said the NSW Liberals & Nationals Government considers biosecurity a core component of the State’s primary industries sector. “This new biosecurity strategy establishes a clear vision for how we can safeguard our primary industries, the environment and the community from biosecurity threats,” Ms Hodgkinson said. “One of the first things this Government did was establish the specialist Biosecurity NSW division within the Department of Primary Industries to lead and coordinate the State’s biosecurity activities. “I recently announced a record investment of $10.8 million for local weed control projects and a new partnership between the DPI and the University of Technology Sydney to strengthen the State’s capacity to identify and respond to biosecurity threats.
“This follows the new $57 million Centre of Excellence for Animal and Plant Health – based at the Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute in south western Sydney, which the Premier and I opened last year.” Biosecurity NSW will work closely with other government departments and agencies such as the Office or Environment and Heritage and the soon to be formed Local Land Services, industries, the community and individuals to implement the NSW Biosecurity Strategy.
