The Ottawa Catholic School Board’s secondary students made a strong showing with 89% reaching the provincial standard in Grade 9 Academic Math and 62% reaching the provincial standard in Applied Math, a 3% increase. “We are pleased with these results which reflect a continued effort to make mathematics a cornerstone of our improvement planning,“ said Elaine McMahon, Chairperson of the Board. We continue to improve: “A focus on mathematics is a key priority of our student success strategy. We continue to show improvement in the Applied stream with a 15% increase over five years while maintaining a high standard in Academic math. Job-embedded professional learning for staff and developing a growth mindset for students support our goals of continuous improvement,” said Denise Andre, Director of Education. The Board Innovation Plan for Student Achievement and Well-Being contains targeted moves that focus on numeracy: 1. Emphasis on educator capacity building and building teacher mathematical fluency. 2. Targeted math learning partner support to build capacity in mathematical teaching. 3. Leveraging digital technologies to deepen and accelerate learning. 4. All school innovation plans include targeted numeracy strategies to improve student achievement. EQAO test results help the Board and schools conduct in-depth analysis of student achievement and identify areas in need of attention in our efforts to continuously improve numeracy and literacy.
