WOW READING CHALLENGE Western Counties Regional Library, local RCMP and Port Maitland School present the WOW! Reading Challenge. The challenge runs from October 31st 2016 – April 3rd, 2017. How it Works:
Children read books from home, school or the public library and report them to their teacher.
Each month, teachers count the total number of books read and they are reported to the library.
Schools compete against other schools in their community as well as schools around the world
At the end of the program, the school with the most books read (per capita) wins a banner proclaiming them champions. There are also draws for books for the schools.
Children also receive incentives such as books and small prizes and visits from special guests throughout the program.
Rules for the WOW! Reading Challenge at the elementary level:
Pag
Any novel, graphic novel or non-fiction book less than 50 pages = 1 book.
From a larger novel, graphic novel or non-fiction book, each 50 pages = 1 book. If a book has between 50-100 pages it is counted as two books, if it has between 100 – 150 pages then it is counted as 3 books, and so on.
If an older student reads a book to a younger student that counts as only one book read for one student. The same principle applies if a teacher reads a book to an entire class: it counts as only “one book” for the entire class.
If all of the students in a classroom are reading the same book (a class novel, for instance) and everyone takes turns reading out loud, when the book is finished it counts as an individual book for each of the participants.
Books read at home/school/library/outside can all be counted for the classroom tally.
