The Process to build the School Improvement Plans for Student Achievement (SIPSAs) Leadership team (approx. 15 teachers) met to do some learning before the October 5th PD day session. The leadership team members guided the SIPSA discussions on this day. All staff have been involved in the development of their division SIPSAs. We created sub-teams based on French Language, English Language and Numeracy. They were asked to create individual SIPSAs to help narrow the learning plan. We want to change the culture from….. it is just the leadership team’s role to develop the SIPSA plan to a whole school commitment that moves the learning process more closely to their specific learning needs. Historically many staff did not have a good understanding of the SIPSA. This approach is based on Hattie’s work about trying to addressing in-school variabilities.

How were urgent student learning needs identified? Each team was asked to create a data story using the following questions: What are students doing well? What learning challenges are emerging? Are we missing any information to tell our story? What evidence do we still need to collect/analyze to tell us the whole story? What instructional practices are benefiting learning? Which are not? Why? (These questions were used to determine a staff content need and pedagogical need connected to the student need.)

What data was used? English: -EQAO: perceptual -DRA: sub-categories posted in ESAT -student surveys French: -report card data -observational/anecdotal Numeracy: -EQAO -Observational data: thinking flexibility with numbers -Grade 8 diagnostic: Proportional and spatial thinking/flexibility of using operations Well-being: -completed a survey from Gr. 1-8 (3 students randomly) about their well-being e.g., Right to Play, Bullying, Conflict -teacher survey completed about student engagement

SIPSA Highlights: Areas of focus Primary English -retelling, inferring and making connections to oral texts, and texts read independently - use of cueing systems, fluency and reading strategies to decode text -Thinking about the steps to communicate their understanding Numeracy -thinking about steps they will use to solve the problem (52% only think about the steps to solve the problem) - Checking their work / mistakes (54%)-EQAO survey -communicate mathematical thinking -clearly showing the use of the mathematical processes (e.g., problem solving, reasoning and proving, reflecting, representing, selecting tools and computational strategies) French -continuous oral speaking without using English: How do they talk around a word that they aren't familiar with? -creating complex oral sentences, without the use of text, in a spontaneous format and with no translation -expanding, extending your ideas, making small details stretched out to larger idea

Junior Division English: Data is analyzed to identify strengths and gaps in literacy achievement and to determine ambitious learning goals for school-wide improvement (DRA, EQAO). Instruction (e.g. the gradual release of responsibility) supports students in moving confidently to independent demonstration and application of the intended learning (e.g., using double entry graphic organizers to support inferring). Questions are asked for different purposes (e.g., clarify meaning, encourage reflection, detect bias, determine author’s intent). Numeracy: -Multiple Choice vs Open Response - students achieve well on multiple choice but wide range on open response - Are our students "guess and checkers" but not able to attack problems that are more open-ended? Or do they need to develop better communication skills? -Geometry - specifically co-ordinate geometry & transformations -Measurement - area of 2-D and volume of 3-D figures and solids, especially triangles, prisms

Junior continued... French: -focus on authentic communication using real-life tasks and experiences using an action-oriented approach: The Action-Oriented Approach: The action-oriented approach to language acquisition views communication as a social activity designed to accomplish specific tasks. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) advocates going beyond the communicative approach to emphasize active language use that develops five language skills – spoken production, spoken interaction, listening, reading, and writing which includes the skills required for writing to interact. It recognizes students as active participants in the learning process. -focus on using the inquiry model in all subject areas in the French classroom, to increase oral discussions in the classroom in large and small group settings -using the student inquiry model will also help students to ask questions of each other, the subject content, and each other to gain information, increase vocabulary, and develop the students' ability to infer and make predictions • Build on spontaneous questions that cause students to wonder and to ask further questions. • Connect student questions and ideas to the big ideas of the curriculum. • Keep student thinking at the centre by involving students in initial planning of the inquiry.

Intermediate Division English: -Since students seem to only use reading strategies when they are asked to use them explicitly, we will create questions/responses that require they use them implicitly and assess that they use them when they aren't prompted. Numeracy: Through the use of a congress to highlight student created strategies, we want to determine if students transfer of knowledge and application with similar problems completed through exit passes or independent work. French: Students show greater engagement by participating in French. -A positive learning environment is established to support student engagement and belonging. Students take initiative to speak French in class and feel safe doing so - mistakes are okay. Students contribute ideas in French to discussions, class activities (whole group, small group) Student learning experiences are engaging, promote collaboration, innovation and creativity (i.e. reflect their needs and interests and are at their level in French)

Well-Being (whole school) -whole-school approach using the following activities: mindfulness, fitness buddies, D.E.A.R. (drop everything and refresh) and common language "look after yourself, look after one another" (Right to Play philosophy) -Information evening: What is mindfulness? -whole school focus on one learning skills (e.g., initiative) to develop a collective understanding of success criteria -every classroom posts and tracks success criteria based on a learning skill focus -the use of community circles to promote student voice to monitor learning skill growth -use assemblies to promote and celebrate classroom growth in “Looking After Themselves, Looking After One Another” -improvement to the physical environment (features) of the school created by students (e.g. murals, door painting, tidy classrooms)
