November 18 marks the first time AT&T makes a push-button telephone available to its customers. President John F. Kennedy is assassinated by a sniper on Friday, November 22nd in Dallas, Texas. At 1:00 PM he is declared dead at Parkland Hospital. Later, the suspect, Lee Harvey Oswald, shoots and kills Dallas police office J. D. Tippit. Oswald is arrested at a movie theater at 3:40 that afternoon and is charged with murder. Lyndon Baines Johnson is sworn in as the 36th President of the United States aboard Air Force One at Love Field Airport in Dallas about two hours after the assassination of President Kennedy. The funeral of President Kennedy takes place on November 25 in Washington, DC. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Classes are cancelled at schools around the USA, and millions watch the funeral on live international television.

After 14 days in a collapsed mine in Germany, eleven miners are rescued on November 7. On November 9, a three train accident in Yokohama, Japan kills 161 people. After a volcanic eruption under the sea near Iceland on November 15, a new island, called Surtsey, is created. The United Nations General Assembly adopts “The Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination” on November 20. November 22 marks the release of The Beatles’ second U.K. album, With the Beatles. On November 29, TransCanada Airlines Flight 831 crashes into a wooded hillside after taking off from Dorval International Airport near Montreal, killing all 118 people on board.
Nativity News: During November, several students from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary provide worship leadership, including Walter Taylor, Phil Hugel, and Floyd Sides. Fred Archer, who served Nativity during the summer of 1963, also returns to lead services. The LCW is very active this month, conducting a study group, attending a special United Church Women retreat at Trinity Episcopal Church, and providing a Thanksgiving meal to a needy family in the community. From the beginning Nativity has been a giving church desiring to be part of the larger community outside the church doors. Officers elected for 1964 are: President-Thelma Nesbitt, Vice-President-Blanche Keller, Secretary-Susie Walden, and Treasurer-Clara Smith. The Luther League continues meeting regularly. This group contributes to the Building Fund by donating $10.00 which was raised through their paper drive project. The church bulletin for November 24 states, “We appreciate the interest and efforts of these young people along with their sponsors and the cooperation of the parents. THANK YOU.” Young people were important to the first years of our church, and they remain vital members today.
