HOLY DOOR CLOSING NOVEMBER 13, 2016 The Holy Door of Mercy is a special Holy Door which Pope Francis has asked to be opened in every Diocese during the Extraordinary Holy Year in order to allow the faithful in every part of the world to experience the Mercy of the Father in its fullness by receiving a plenary indulgence (see below). Bishop Sis designated Sacred Heart Cathedral as one of the churches in our Diocese to have the Holy Door. We are so fortunate to have a Holy Door very close. You will find a card in the vestibule of the Cathedral explaining what to do at the Holy Door along with the graces received by passing through the Door. It also contains the “Prayer Before Crossing the Threshold of the Holy Door” and The “Prayer After Crossing the Threshold of the Holy Door.” There is another card of the picture of the Holy Door and Official Prayer by Pope Francis for the Jubilee Year of Mercy. Both of the cards are for all visitors to take with them as a courtesy of the Cathedral and the Ladies Altar Society. The Cathedral has Mass during the week at 12:10 pm as well as the weekend Masses — Saturday at 5:00 pm (English) and Sunday at 10:00 am (English), 12:00 noon (Spanish) and 6:00 pm (English). Confessions at the Cathedral are on Wednesday from 2:00-2:30 and on Saturday from 4:00-4:30. However, in order to fulfill one of the requirements to receive the graces for passing through the Holy Door, confession does not have to be fulfilled at the Cathedral. Confessions at St. Ambrose are from 5:00-5:30 pm on Saturday. It has to be done within a reasonable amount of time before or after passing through the Holy Door. We don’t want to miss this golden opportunity to cleanse ourselves of all temporal punishment due to our sins, creating a “clean slate!” It is also an opportunity to release souls from purgatory by passing through the Holy Door for their benefit! Think of the souls that we can save and the power of their prayers in return! NOTE: The Holy Door is open Monday-Friday from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm. On Saturday only the northwest door of the church is open until 4:00 pm and then all doors are open until after the 5:00 pm Mass. On Sunday all door are open from 9:00 am until after the 6:00 pm Mass. Pope Francis wrote the following about gaining a Plenary Indulgence by crossing through a Holy Door during the Jubilee Year of Mercy: “I wish that the Jubilee Indulgence may reach each one as a genuine experience of God’s mercy, which comes to meet each person in the Face of the Father who welcomes and forgives, forgetting completely the sin committed. To experience and obtain the Indulgence, the faithful are called to make a brief pilgrimage to the Holy Door, open in every Cathedral or in the churches designated by the Diocesan Bishop […] as a sign of the deep desire for true conversion. […] It is important that this moment be linked, first and foremost, to the Sacrament of Reconciliation and to the celebration of the Holy Eucharist with a reflection on mercy. It will be necessary to accompany these celebrations with the profession of faith and with prayer for me and for the intentions that I bear in my heart for the good of the Church and of the entire world.” A Plenary Indulgence is the complete remission of all temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven. In addition to prayerfully crossing through the Holy Door, Pope Francis has established the following conditions to be met in order to receive this Jubilee Indulgence:
Go to Sacramental Confession within several days before or after you cross through the Holy Door.
Receive Holy Communion (with personal reflection on mercy) within several days before or after you cross through the Holy Door.
Pray for the intentions of the Pope by praying the Profession of Faith (also typically one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be).
Truly repent of your sin and let go of your attachment to sin, even venial sin.
Be in the state of grace at least at the time of the visit to the Holy Door.
FURTHER CLARIFICATIONS:
An Indulgence can be obtained for oneself or for souls in Purgatory, but it cannot be applied to other persons living on earth.
A Plenary Indulgence can be acquired multiple times throughout the year, but no more than once in the course of a day.
A single sacramental Confession is sufficient for gaining several Plenary Indulgences.
A separate reception of Holy Communion and a separate prayer for the Pope’s intentions are required for each Plenary Indulgence.
It is appropriate, but not necessary, that the reception of Communion and the prayer for the Pope’s intentions take place on the same day as the visit to the Holy Door.
It is sufficient that the sacramental Confession, reception of Communion, and the prayer for the Pope’s intentions be carried out within several days before or after the visit to the Holy Door.
