Challenges, Opportunities & Change
Colet Bartow
2017 is looking like a year with many changes and challenges for K-12 education. My challenge to you this school year is to look beyond the tasks and activities that make up our day-to-day lives and account for the impact you make—the impact that changes the course of a life or just makes someone’s day. The stories that you can tell about how you are making a difference need to be shared! Send me your stories, photos, and great ideas to share in the upcoming newsletters or join the Montana Teacher-Librarian Online PLC (details on page 6). Makerspace
Makerspace Friday’s at HMS finds the library filled with beeps, buzzes, laughter, excited voices and most importantly, students. HMS students are creating circuits, building structures, programming robots, knitting scarves and painting pictures. In essence, they are learning by doing and having a lot of fun in the process. Once a month the Makerspace also features the opportunity for students to explore various world cultures through language, music, food and art. Last year our students celebrated Chinese New Year with tea eggs, they made paper lanterns and Chinese paper cuts. They wrote their names in Chinese calligraphy and listened to the pentatonic qualities of Chinese music. They also explored the delights of Irish culture, including music by members of Dublin Gulch, Irish soda bread, tying Celtic knots, creating illuminated letter pins, attempting to pronounce Irish names and more. Lots of learning in our library come and see! Amy Friez

Heather Dickerson of the Lewis & Clark Library in Helena, Montana and Amy Andreas of the Browning High School Library in Browning, Montana shared their successful models for encouraging and supporting teen poets. From these two models as examples, the webinar explores the range of activities in libraries that can support poetry appreciation and creation. Whether a writing workshop or performance, a competition or publication. any library can implement a program that is appropriate to their resources and community. Public and K-12 librarians, A group of public libraries currently shares a group subscription to World Book. This contract is being coordinated by the North Lake Public Library District in Polson. The World Book representative contacted me about extending this offer to additional libraries, and he confirmed that K-12 libraries would also be eligible to participate. For those of you who have not participated in an opt-in group before: usually how it works is a library will express interest and then wait to receive a cost quote based on the number of libraries participating. There is no obligation to participate until you agree to the quoted price and sign an agreement. An information flier for World Book is available here. Trial information for the World Book site is below. Feel free to contact Jonathan Leonard directly if you have questions about this offer.
