The Portrait—Part 39

May 26/27, 2012 John 14:1-15

FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE 14:1 It was Jesus who was headed for the agony of the cross; it was Jesus who was deeply ‘troubled’ in heart (12:27). Yet when of all times it would have been appropriate for Jesus’ followers to lend Him support, He was the one who comforted. 14:2 Other descriptions of Heaven: • a country (Hebrews 11:16), due to its vastness • a city (Hebrews 12:22), emphasizing large number of inhabitants • a kingdom (2 Timothy 4:18), because it has a King (Daniel 4:37; cf. Matthew 11:25; Acts 17:24) • paradise (Luke 23:43; 2 Corinthians 12:4; Revelation 2:7), because of indescribable beauty • a place of rest (Hebrews 4:1–11), where the redeemed are free 14:2 The point is not the lavishness, but the fact that abundant provision is made…there is more than enough space for everyone to join him. 14:3 A clear promise of return…His return is as certain as his departure. 14:6 This is the sixth “I AM” statement in John. • I AM the Way that leads to the Father. • I AM the Truth that teaches the knowledge of God the Father. • I AM the Life that awakens all who seek the Father. 14:7 Jesus did not claim merely to know the way, the truth, and the life as a formula; but He actually is the answer to human problem of separation from God: 1. He is the Way to the Father because only He has an intimate knowledge of God unmarred by sin. 2. He is the Truth because he has the perfect power of making your life a comprehensible experience. 3. He is the Life because he was not subject to death but made it subject to him.

14:9 The Lord had poured His life into these men. Yet despite being with Him for so long, they still did not fully understand Jesus and His union with the Father. 14:11 Jesus’ declarations of equality with God were confirmed by His supernatural works. 14:12 The greater works which Jesus referred to are not greater in power than those He performed, but greater in extent. 14:13-14 To ask in Jesus’ name is not a magic formula, obligating God to grant every request people make. To pray in Jesus’ name has a far more profound and serious meaning: 1. To make requests consistent with God’s will and the purposes of His kingdom 2. To acknowledge our own insufficiency 3. To approach God based on the merits of Jesus Christ (John 16:26–28; Philippians 4:19) 4. To express a sincere desire that God would be glorified in the answer; to align one’s requests with the Father’s supreme goal When believers pray in this way, we pray in keeping with Jesus’ name —His person, His purposes, and His preeminence.
