PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Carol Batdorf

Happy June Everyone, It might not feel like June today (48 F) but by the end of the week it will be in the high 80’s so summer is on its way. I am happy to report that the white Scottish rose had a good showing this spring. The nasty winter moth and gypsy moth caterpillars have left some blooms for me to enjoy. There may be a few yellow Texas roses that survive the onslaught as well. I was out in the garden this past weekend trying to get lots of things planted before the heat comes in. At 5:45 PM on the dot I would start getting eaten alive by the bugs that feed in my garden. Please be careful of all the insects that live in your garden. Most of them are good bugs and do not feed on you. If at all possible use protective wear and organic deterrents to keep the bugs at bay rather than going the toxic chemical road. The chemicals are not picky as to if the insect is good for the garden or bad for the garden. The chemicals will kill all insects and also get into our neighborhood’s groundwater systems. Then there are the birds and other animals that eat the bugs and the toxins on them. We have to be mindful of how we affect our little piece of Earth. I am hoping that you will be kind to our one and only Earth because there are other forces at work against it and Earth needs all the help it can get these days. A big Thank You goes out to all who helped and attended the May plant sale and auction. We had a wonderful selection of plants to bid on. I look around my gardens and I see many plants I have bought at past auctions. Pres. Letter continued on next page

President’s Letter continued:

It’s that time of the year to gather at Tuck’s Point for a pot luck picnic. Come and enjoy the waterfront with friends, good food and wonderful flowers from your gardens. We can decorate the buffet tables and picnic table with your flower offerings. Please bring a dish to share and flower arrangements for the tables. See you at 6 PM for a wonderful meal. Before I sign off I would like to say THANK YOU to the Board and all the members who have worked so diligently through the year. Without you we would not exist. Many thanks for a job well done. Happy gardening everyone. See you at the picnic June 27th and the road trip to Bedrock Gardens on June 17th . Carol
